Italian Intermediate (part 1)

In Part 1, you’ll revise and consolidate topics from lower intermediate level, but with more depth and fluency, includes reflexive verbs in the past tense.

You’ll practice using a variety of tenses and grammatical rules to describe facts and people in the past and discuss plans for holidays and outings.

You’ll delve further into cultural aspects of Italy, such as art and architecture, politics, society, food and film, to add context.

Who is it for?

Are you already communicating at CEFR A2 level (around 120 hours of formal study)? If you have completed our lower intermediate syllabus or have a good or recent GCSE then join us here. Check the eligibility section.

Timetable

This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

This course will help extend and enrich your vocabulary, and consolidate key grammar points, which are essential to improving overall communication.

By the end of this course, you will be able to

• describe facts and people in the past
• plan and make suggestions for holidays and outings
• discuss cultural aspects of Italy.

Grammatical structures

• consolidation of passato prossimo with avere and essere
• consolidation of reflexive verbs in the past tense.

You will be awarded an official City St George's, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.

Assessment

There is no formal assessment at the end of the course, but you will be set weekly homework.

Teaching

Our Italian courses are designed to develop your skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing the language. With smaller class sizes, there’s plenty of time for individual learning with the tutor, and to practice your pronunciation through role-playing scenarios.

Teaching draws on newspapers, literature and films to learn vocabulary related to Italian culture and current affairs, adding a contemporary context to your learning.

You’ll have access to our e-learning platform, Moodle. This hosts lessons content and other materials, so you can continue learning independently between lessons.

It is the right level if one of the following applies:

• you can communicate at A2 level, according to the Common European Framework Reference for Languages
• you have completed our full Italian lower intermediate syllabus, or equivalent course elsewhere
• you have studied formally for 120 hours
• you have a good or recent GCSE.

You should already be able to:

• express your wishes and desires
• make polite requests
• give advice
• use the conditional tense
• use the imperfetto and passato prossimo tenses.
