French Lower Intermediate (part 3)

Part 3 will help you to develop the confidence to speak, read and write in French with more fluency.

You will learn how to talk about tastes and preferences and express opinions. You’ll be introduced to the subjunctive mood and practice your knowledge of the imperfect, perfect and conditional tenses.

You will also draw on newspapers, novels, TV and film, to solidify your learning and build your awareness of French current and social affairs.

This is the last final module of the French Lower Intermediate syllabus. On completion you will have reached CEFR A2/B1 level of learning.

Who is it for?

We’ll want you to be able to handle complex sentences, which necessitates approximately 160 hours of formal study or a recent and good GCSE. You may have recently completed part 2 of our lower intermediate syllabus, or a similar course. See the eligibility section.

Timetable

This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

By the end of this course you will be able to

• talk about films and shows
• talk about preferences, tastes and give opinions
• understand and use different levels of formal and informal language
• describe famous sites
• tell a story
• talk about your memories and make plans.

Grammatical structures

• consolidation of imperfect and perfect tenses
• conditional tenses
• combining the pluperfect “If I had done” and conditional perfect “I would have done”
• si clause using present, future, imperfect, conditional, pluperfect and past conditional
• introduction to subjunctive mood.

You will be awarded an official City St George's, University of London certificate on completion of the course. You must attend over 70 per cent of the classes to be eligible for the certificate.

There is no formal assessment, but you will need to complete weekly homework assignments.

Teaching

At this level, we introduce more complicated learning material which relates to current affairs and contemporary social issues.

Lesson content is sent in advance, giving you extra time to practice beforehand and participate more during the class.

It is the right level if you:

• have completed part 2 of the lower intermediate syllabus, or equivalent course elsewhere
• have a good or recent French GCSE
• can communicate at CEFR A1/A2 level, according to the Common European Framework Reference of languages
• have studied French formally for 160 hours.

You should already:

• be able to talk about necessities and obligations
• know how to follow instructions, such as in a recipe
• feel confident talking about past trips and holidays
• know how to use relative pronouns
• have been introduced to the pluperfect
• understand complex interrogatives.

English requirements

You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
