About the School of Health & Medical Sciences

The School of Health & Medical Sciences combines the previous St George’s School of Health & Medical Sciences and City’s School of Health & Psychological Sciences, and is now one of the largest suppliers of the health workforce in the capital.

We are a leading provider of education in the fields of healthcare, medicine and psychology, offering a wide breadth of courses.

Our legacy institutions have a strong tradition of excellence in education, including over 250 years of experience in medical training and more than 140 years in nursing education.

We take pride in nurturing and developing the next generation of clinical practitioners and leaders. Through our strategic partnerships with top healthcare providers in London and the South-East, our students gain excellent placement experiences, ensuring they are prepared for their future careers.

Our students come together from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds, from those taking their first steps in healthcare, to practitioners with many years of experience.

We offer state-of-the-art clinical skills facilities at both our Tooting (attached to St George’s hospital) and Clerkenwell campuses, creating an exciting and innovative learning environment.

The School is being formed through the integration of the previous St George’s School of Health & Medical Sciences and City’s School of Health & Psychological Sciences. We are currently in a transition period during the Spring and Summer of 2025 whilst the structure of the School is being developed.

Please note that rankings referred to on this page were awarded to City, University of London and St George’s, University of London separately prior to our merger in August 2024.

We are consistently ranked as one of the best providers in London

Undergraduate and Pre-Registration courses

We offer a range of undergraduate/pre-registration degrees in medicine, midwifery, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, paramedic science, physiotherapy, psychology, radiography, science, and speech and language therapy. Each course is developed to deliver the core skills and understanding needed to pursue and succeed in these important and rewarding careers.

Foundation degrees

We offer the following foundation courses; Introduction to Health Sciences, Introduction to Optometry, Introduction to Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiography and Nursing Associate.

Postgraduate Diplomas and pre-registration courses

Our graduate-entry pre-registration courses allow graduates from other disciplines to gain a pre-registration health qualification in approximately two years as opposed to the usual three or four - providing a fast-track route into health professions.

Postgraduate courses

Postgraduate students learn with academic staff who are clinical practitioners and academics engaged in interdisciplinary research across the fields of healthcare, medicine and psychology.

Their work is transforming the provision of healthcare services in the UK and internationally.

Masters courses

Our flexible postgraduate Masters courses allow students to further develop skills in specialist practice areas and to develop in-depth knowledge in a wide-range of areas.

Our Masters courses start in September each year, with some also offering the opportunity to begin studying in January.

Research degrees

The School of Health & Medical Sciences is committed to developing the research, practice and policy leaders of tomorrow. With world class researchers and experienced practitioners leading our courses, students graduate with a high level of skill in research methods and in the implementation of evidence-based care.

Continuing Personal and Professional Development (CPPD)

Lifelong learning is a fundamental part of the School's ethos and many students return to us to continue their professional development throughout their career.

Our Continuing Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) portfolio delivers a wide range of courses that benefit both employers and individuals by tailoring activity that fits around personal and professional commitments.

We offer a wide range of day courses, modules and bespoke training to develop clinical skills, broaden knowledge in academic and practical areas, and allow practitioners to move into health research.
