Facilities and resources
City St George's is home to four specialist libraries and library services which give Economics students access to extensive academic resources and flexible study environments across multiple campuses.
On the Clerkenwell and Moorgate campuses, you can use study spaces and specialist collections including the Business Library, which features PCs with access to key financial databases, and group study rooms equipped with screens or whiteboards.
The department has a subscription to Bloomberg and Datastream, both of which are available in the Northampton Square Library.
Anyone working in any part of the financial services sector - investment banking, hedge funds, compliance, regulation, etc. - must use the Bloomberg software on a daily basis.
Economics undergraduate and postgraduate students can obtain the Bloomberg certificate, a qualification which will assist you in the job market.
The Department has a full online subscription to Elsevier's extensive Handbooks in Economics series. Free online subscriptions to the Financial Times and The Economist are also available.
These facilities and specialist subscriptions support academic study while helping students develop the practical skills and industry familiarity needed for their future careers.
Extracurricular Activities
The Department is a dynamic centre for learning and we seek to engage our students outside of the classroom, as well as in the lecture theatre. To this end, we organise a number of extracurricular activities:
- Book Club
- Trading Competition
- Schumpeter Journal
- Ambassador Scheme
The Department also collaborates with the Economics Society to organise talks, workshops and careers-related events.
Graduate prospects
There are a wide range of employment opportunities for economists in economic and management consultancies, multinationals, government agencies and in business and finance, particularly in the City of London.
Our graduates succeed in a highly competitive job market thanks to the experience and skills gained on a professional placement year. Past students have undertaken placements with organisations like the Department for Work and Pensions, GlaxoSmithKline, RBS and HM Treasury.
We have a dedicated Careers Consultant who, in collaboration with our Employability Lead, organises regular career events during the academic year to help students explore career paths.
We also have an extensive community of alumni who regularly come to the Department to talk to our students and share their experiences. Our active LinkedIn Group for alumni helps graduates build their networks and they also get free lifetime membership to City's Alumni network.
