The Lord Dennis Stevenson Medical Scholarship provides financial support to a selected second-year MBBS student at City St George's, School of Health & Medical Sciences (Tooting), helping to fund their studies during Years 3, 4 and 5 of the Medicine degree and supporting equal opportunity regardless of background.

Direct Cremation, London Funerals, and Harbour Water Cremation have committed 10% of their profits to funding medical scholarships and supporting the next generation of NHS staff. City St George's is honoured to launch the Lord Dennis Stevenson Medical Scholarship with their support.
About Lord Dennis Stevenson
Dennis Stevenson (Lord Stevenson) has enjoyed an exceptionally varied career spanning business, public service and philanthropy.
As an entrepreneur, he has founded around 20 start-up businesses, most of which have gone on to be successful. He also served as Chairman of several major companies, including Pearson, HBOS and GPA. Together with his wife, Charlotte, he has devoted much of the success of his business career to supporting charitable causes.
Alongside his commercial achievements, Lord Stevenson has dedicated much of his life to public service. Over the years, he has served as Chairman of the Peterlee and Aycliffe New Town Corporation, Chairman of the Trustees of the Tate, Chairman of the National Association of Youth Clubs, and Chairman of Aldeburgh Music, holding each role for at least a decade.
Today, much of his work focuses on improving mental health and promoting international peace. He founded MQ, the UK's first major mental health research charity, helping to transform the understanding and treatment of mental illness. He also co-founded Inter Mediate with Jonathan Powell, an independent organisation that works around the world to help resolve complex conflicts and support peacebuilding efforts.
Lord Stevenson has been married to his wife, Charlotte, since 1972. Together, they raised four children and now enjoy spending time with their grandchildren. Through both his professional achievements and his lifelong commitment to public service, Lord Stevenson has demonstrated the importance of creating opportunities for others, making him a fitting namesake for a scholarship supporting the next generation of doctors.
About the scholarship
A second-year MBBS student will be selected using two metrics:
- An aggregated score from the first two years of exams
- Indicators that the student is in need of financial support
The selected recipient will receive £5,333 per year for the following three years of their medical education, supporting Years 3, 4 and 5 of the Medicine degree. This will allow the recipient to focus on their studies rather than financial pressures.
Selection process
We do not accept applications for this scholarship. Each year, a panel of staff will select the recipient by identifying eligible students and using the above criteria to award the scholarship to the individual who best meets them.
