The Academic Advising system operates to support undergraduate and postgraduate students studying at City St George's, University of London.
Academic advisers play an important role in supporting your academic journey, helping you engage successfully with your programme, achieve your goals and make informed decisions throughout your studies.
As a City St George's student, you will be allocated a named Academic Adviser. This is a member of academic staff who will support your academic development, encourage engagement with your studies and help you navigate University processes and opportunities.
Your Academic Adviser will work alongside other University services to ensure you can access the guidance and support you need. They are often your first point of contact for academic matters and can help connect you with specialist services where appropriate.
An Academic Adviser is normally assigned for the duration of your programme. The exact operation of academic advising may vary across Schools and programmes, and programme-specific information can be found in your Programme Handbook.
Aims
The aim of the Academic Advising system is to:
- Ensure that every student has a named academic contact throughout their studies.
- Support students' academic success, progression and achievement.
- Foster students' personal, professional and academic development.
- Encourage engagement with learning opportunities and the wider University community.
- Help students access appropriate services, resources and specialist support when required.
Role of the Academic Adviser
The role of the Academic Adviser is to:
- Provide guidance and support for academic development and progression.
- Encourage reflection on academic performance, achievement and future goals.
- Support students in making informed choices about their studies and academic opportunities.
- Promote student engagement, attendance and participation in learning activities.
- Act as a first point of contact for academic concerns and direct students to appropriate specialist services where required.
- Meet with students through scheduled individual and/or group advising sessions.
- Help students understand University policies, procedures and expectations relevant to their studies.
- Maintain appropriate records of advising interactions in accordance with University guidance.
Your role
Your role in the process is to:
- Engage actively with academic advising meetings and opportunities.
- Maintain regular contact with your Academic Adviser as agreed within your School or programme.
- Discuss any academic concerns, challenges or aspirations openly so that appropriate advice and support can be provided.
- Take responsibility for your own learning, development and engagement with your programme.
- Respond to communications from your Academic Adviser and School when required.
- Seek advice at an early stage if circumstances are affecting your studies or academic progress.
- Make use of the wider support services and opportunities recommended by your Academic Adviser.
