The Widening Participation team offer a travel bursary for eligible students to support attendance to in-person events and interviews at our Tooting Campus.
City St George’s School of Health & Medical Sciences is committed to providing the opportunity of higher education to all students who can benefit from it, regardless of circumstance and background. We also want to ensure that students from underrepresented groups are able to attend on-site events at our Tooting campus in order to make informed choices about their future.
We are proud to offer a travel bursary to support such students to attend key events at the School of Health & Medical Sciences Tooting campus.
We are currently only able to offer the travel bursary to students considering study on undergraduate courses at the School of Health & Medical Sciences Tooting campus.
What it covers
The travel bursary can be used to cover travel for:
- open days
- interviews
- applicant events
- widening participation activities
- offer holder events.
You are eligible to apply for the travel bursary if you meet the contextual admissions criteria stipulated for your prospective year of entry.
The travel bursary is available to cover reasonable costs on public transport (standard travel class) or reimbursement of petrol costs. Travel by taxis is not included in the travel bursary.
When and how to claim
The process for which to claim a travel bursary is as follows:
- Book onto the City St George’s event/interview.
- Submit a travel bursary application via this application form.
- Wait to hear the outcome the travel bursary application. Reimbursement is not guaranteed until the application has been approved.
- Book required travel tickets/plan the journey in advance of event/interview.
- Complete the travel bursary claim form which will be emailed with the travel bursary applicational approval, and submit it to wp@sgul.ac.uk.
Travel bursaries will be processed after the event/interview in question; reimbursements may take up to 3 weeks to be received by the bank. In the event that you are unable to purchase tickets upfront, you can contact the Widening Participation team who may be able to purchase these on your behalf.
Claim requirements and limitations
How do I claim petrol costs?
We can pay 40p per mile, calculated from your place of residence to City St George’s (Tooting campus) and back using Google Maps.
You don’t need to provide petrol costs or receipts.
The maximum amount you can claim for is £200.
What proof do I need to claim public transport costs?
Electronic receipts/booking confirmation emails detailing your journey booking and payment confirmation.
The cost of your travel tickets and details of the journey must be clearly indicated.
Bank or credit card statements are not acceptable forms of proof.
How long will it take to receive a decision on my application?
We will aim to get back to you within 5 working days with the outcome of your application.
Can my parent/guardian accompany me to the event and will their travel also be paid?
In the first instance only the attendee’s travel will be paid.
However, if you need care or assistance to get to or at the event, or in other exceptional circumstances, we may be able to cover the travel costs of an additional attendee.

Can funds only be paid as a reimbursement, after I've paid for my travel tickets in the first place?
In most instances, yes.
However, if it will be difficult for you to purchase tickets upfront please contact us at wp@sgul.ac.uk as we may be able to purchase them in advance for you.
Do I need to make my claim within a certain timeframe?
Yes, your travel claim must be submitted within 3 months of purchase – as we will not usually process your claim until after the event, please ensure that you do not book your travel more than 3 months in advance of the event.
Please note: The travel bursary is a finite amount of money. Therefore, once the threshold for reimbursement has been met for allocated events, we will be unable to provide reimbursement. To mitigate for this, we allocate certain amounts of the budget to events and activities across the year to allow us to support as many applicants as possible.
