The Novel Studio published alumni

The Novel Studio’s year-long course taught by professional writers and editors provides essential techniques and guidance to enable its students to draft their own novels, and gain interest from agents within the industry. Many have successfully gone on to have their work published after the course. Read on for their inspiring stories.

Janice Okoh

Janice's debut novel, Girl Number Eight, will be published by HarperCollins in January 2027. Hot on the heels of her BAFTA win for BBC3's Just Act Normal, Janice's novel is a gripping, atmospheric thriller set in Nigeria.

Deepa Anappara

Deepa Anappara The Last of EarthDeepa's second novel, The Last of Earth, was published by Oneworld in hardback as a lead title in February 2026.

Deepa's debut novel, Djinn Patrol on the Purple Line (Chatto & Windus), was longlisted for the 2020 Women’s Prize and has been translated into 23 languages. Deepa Anappara Djinn Patrol on the purple line, book cover features a close up of a woman's eyeA former journalist whose reporting on poverty, religious violence and education won multiple awards, Anappara is also the co-editor of the essay collection Letters to a Writer of Colour, published by Penguin in 2023.

Harriet Tyce

Witch TrialHarriet Tyce has published five bestselling, critically acclaimed crime novels with Wildfire: Blood Orange (her debut), The Lies You Told, It Ends at Midnight , and A Lesson in Cruelty and her fifth novel, Witch Trial, published in 2026.

A recent star of BBC One's hit show, The Traitors, Harriet initiated and generously funded our Novel Studio scholarship for four years.

Lara Haworth

Monumenta by Laura Haworth. 'This slight book is a substantial achievement. Laura Haworth is an exciting new voice in literary fiction' - Matt Rowland HillLara's debut novel, Monumenta, was published in hardback in 2024 and has since been shortlisted for the Nero Book Awards Debut Fiction Prize, shortlisted for the Society of Authors McKitterick prize and been a Financial Times best new debut.

Jo Cunningham

Death by Numbers by Jo Cunningham 'something doesn't add up at the seasideJo's cosy crime debut, Death By Numbers, featuring a risk-averse insurance actuary, was published in 2024 with Constable. Her second novel, A Calculated Murder, came out this summer with the Belfast Telegraph calling it 'a terrifically funny, endearing read.'

Katharine Light

Three Katharine Light novel covers together: Like Me, Me Too, You TooKatharine published her debut novel Like Me in 2023 and was subsequently shortlisted for The Selfies Book Awards. Katherine's second novel, Me Too, came out in 2024 with a third, You Too, published in 2025.

E.L. Norry

Fable House by E.L. Norry. 'Unlock the legends, unleash the magic, save your home.E.L. Norry published her debut children's fantasy novel, Fablehouse, with Bloomsbury in 2023. Her second children's book, Runaways, was published in 2025, also with Bloomsbury, with author Maisie Chan calling it 'a fantastic novel that doesn't shy away from big emotions.'

Vasundhara Singh

Mistress, Mother by Vasundhara Singh. Published by ukiyotoVasundhara published her debut novel, Mistress, Mother with Ukiyoto in 2022. Described by one reviewer as 'a beautiful, unique and refreshing story with a different perspective that really touches everyone's hearts.' Vasundhar lives in Bhopal, India and is a graduate of Journalism from Delhi University. She is also an occasional poet and has twice been a winner of our City Writes competition.

Anna Mazzola

The book of secrets by Anna Mazzola - black book cover with purple and white writing with detailed small illustrations of feathers, flowers, books and funghiAnna has published her first legal thriller, Notes on a Drowning, under the name of Anna Sharpe. Anna's third novel, The Clockwork Girl, described as 'truly spellbinding' by Ian Rankin, was published in January 2023 and her fourth, The House of Whispers, was published in October 2023, winning the Historical Novel of the Year at the Fingerprint Awards 2024. Her latest novel, The Book of Secrets was published in March 2024 and promptly selected as a Times Historical Novel of the Month and has since won 2025's CWA Gold Dagger Award for crime novel of the year. Anna’s debut historical novel, The Unseeing, was published by Tinder Press in July 2016, while her second novel, The Story Keeper, also Tinder Press, was published in 2018, all to great acclaim.

Janet Phillips

Great Literary Friendships, Janet Phillips Janet has published her debut book, Great Literary Friendships, with Bodleian Library. Described by Publishers Weekly as a 'fun spin on literary analysis'.

Laurence Kershook

The Broygus, Lawrence Kershook In April 2022, Laurence Kershook published his debut novel, The Broygus, a story set in the Jewish East End which follows a family torn apart by events spanning three-quarters of the twentieth century.

Máire Malone

The Dream Circle, Máire Malone Máire's debut novel, The Dream Circle , was published in 2018 and selected as a finalist in the Eyelands International Book Awards, 2019.

Her second novel, Hungry Trails, was published in 2018 and received ‘Highly Recommended' Award of Excellence from The Historical Fiction Company, 2023. It was also selected as a finalist in The Wishing Shelf Book Awards, 2023

Emma Howarth

The Astrology Almanac 2024 by Emma Howarth - purple book cover with constellations and starsignsEmma Howarth published her debut book A Year of Mystical Thinking with Hay House in 2021. Written with humour and curiosity, Emma shows us that we don't need to fly to Italy, India or Bali to have an adventure and find inner peace - there's plenty of magic right on our doorstep.

Simon Culleton

Shadows of FathersSimon Culleton published his debut novel, Shadows of Fathers, with Stairwell Books in October 2021. Available on Amazon, Google books, Stairwell Books and many more.

Elizabeth Chakrabarty

Elizabeth ChakrabartyElizabeth published her debut novel, Lessons in Love and Other Crimes, with The Indigo Press in April 2021. The novel has since been longlisted for The Desmond Elliot Prize and shortlisted for the Polari Prize.

Attiya Khan

A GP and mother of three, Attiya was selected for David Higham's Underrepresented Writers day and longlisted for Undiscovered Voices 2020.

Ali Thurm

One Scheme of Happiness, Ali ThurmAli Thurm published her debut novel One Scheme of Happiness, with Retreat West Books in 2020. Set on the isolated Yorkshire coast, it's a dark tale of delusion, dressing-up and Jane Austen.

Kiare Ladner

Kiare LadnerKiare Ladner (2010/11) sold her debut novel, Nightshift, to Picador in a pre-emptive bid. Associate Publisher, Ravi Mirchandani, has called the novel “an immensely exciting debut.” Kiare is now teaching on the Novel Studio. Her novel was published in February 2021.

Hannah Begbie

Can you always trust what you see?"Hannah Begbie (2015/16) published her debut novel, Mother, with HarperFiction in 2018. In the same year she won The Romantic Novelists' Association's (RNA) Joan Hessayon Award for new writers.

In 2015, she joined the board of The Cystic Fibrosis Trust, to raise awareness and advocate for the CF community. She also enrolled in The Novel Studio course at City St George's, winning that year’s new writing prize, and developing what was to become her debut novel.

TV rights for her debut have now been sold to Clerkenwell Films following a four-way auction, with The Crown screenwriter, Tom Edge (Begbie’s husband) attached.

Hannah published her second novel, Blurred Lines, in July 2020 with HarperFiction.

Shakrukh Husain

Shahrukh Husain’s (2004/5) The Virago Book of Witches has been reissuThe Virago Book of Witches Shakrukh Husain, cover features an assortment of illustrations, a black cat, a feather, a skull, a broomed for 2019 with a new preface written by Shah. This follows hot on the heels of the ITV screening of her six-part series ‘Beecham House’ set in India in the late 18th century.

Shahrukh has also published her novel, A Restless Wind, with Picador India. Shah is a prolific writer for adults and children, fiction and non-fiction, stage and screen.

Jennifer Gray's Atticus Claw Breaks the Law, was the winner of the 2014 Red House Children’s Book Award Younger Readers category. She and has also written:

Mike Clarke

Mike Clarke Gluten tolerant, book cover features a ball of doughMike Clarke (2009/10) has published a short story collection, Gluten Tolerant, which brings together seven stories all of which were selected and performed by Liars’ League, the award-winning live fiction evening run by City St George's tutor Katy Darby.

Mike Clarke published an ebook in 2015 of four short stories read at Liars’ League, called: Do you dare me to cross the line?

Remy Salters

Remy Salters Butterfly ranch, cover features a butterfly pupea with a fetus insideRemy Salters (2005/6) debut novel Butterfly Ranch, with Matador Press in 2018.

Developed while on The Novel Studio, the novel is set in a remote jungle lodge in Southern Belize, where a local policeman investigates the mysterious disappearance of a world-famous reclusive author.

In 2018, the book won an International Rubery Book Award for fiction, the People’s Book Prize and a Chill with a Book Reader’s prize.

Greg Keen

Greg won the CWA Debut Dagger award for Soho Dead.

Nicole Dutu

Nicole Dutu (2009/10) published her debut novel, How I Defeated Dracula (Libris Editorial, 2017).

Rachel Mann

Described by novelist Clare Jacob as a “very well written and sensitive novel which brings the adolescent life of a young Jewish girl in New York and in summer camp to poignant life.”

Rachel’s play, Class Mother, has also been nominated for best play at the Venus/ Adonis Theater Festival NYC 2016.

Neil Griffiths

Neil Griffiths (2006/7) published his first novel, Isabella’s Heiress, in February 2015.

Kit Habianic

The story of a South Wales mining community ripped apart by the miners' strike of 1984-1985, an earlier draft of her novel was shortlisted for the Daily Mail/Transworld debut novel prize.

Kit is the first Novel Studio student to publish her novel while on the course!

Ruth Rudherham

Alexandra Cameron

Alexandra Cameron's (2006/7) debut novel Rachael's Gift was published by ANZ Picador in September 2014.

Her agent describes it as 'a detective story of the heart, about a mother's uncompromising love for her daughter and how far she will go to protect her.'

Rachel Zadok

Rachael Zadok Sister sister, cover features a butterflyRachel Zadok's second novel, Sister Sister, was published by Kwela Books in 2013.

Her first novel, Gem Squash Tokoloshe (Pan Macmillan, 2005), was shortlisted for The Whitbread First Novel Award (2005) and The John Llewellyn Rhys Prize (2005).

Lawrence Patchett

Lawrence Patchett's (2005/6) collection of short stories, I Got his Blood on Me, was published by Victoria University Press, 2012.

Penny Rudge

Penny Rudge foolish lessons in life and love, cover features London skylinePenny Rudge's (2005/6) Foolish Lessons in Life and Love was published by Little Brown in 2010 and the Film & TV rights have been optioned to producer Diana Napper.

Penny is currently working on her second novel, Ellie, about a girl with Usher’s Syndrome, a genetic disorder from which she herself suffers.
