Extraordinary women

City women have been achieving the extraordinary since 1894.

Here we celebrate some of the great many whose work or study at City St George's forms part of a remarkable story of achievement. These women inspire us because they’ve been ready to try, to challenge and to lead; making life better for others and pushing the boundaries of what can be accomplished.

Each year, on International Women’s Day, a new City St George's woman is added to the gallery. Staff and students are invited to put forward their nominations, which are reviewed by a panel with representation across the University.

Extraordinary women at City St George's

Professor Kirsty Le Doare

Professor of Vaccinology and Immunology, City St George's, University of London

Kirsty is an internationally recognised expert in maternal, neonatal and child health whose pioneering research on Group B Streptococcus immunology, maternal vaccination and infant immunity has shaped global understanding and practice. As a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow and Professor of Vaccinology, she leads influential international partnerships and high‑impact studies, strengthening research capacity in Uganda and advancing the field of maternal and neonatal immunology.

Professor Amina Jindani

Professor of Tuberculosis Therapeutics, City St George's, University of London

For more than 40 years, Amina has conducted international multicentre clinical trials on pulmonary tuberculosis with the objective of significantly reducing treatment duration, and eventually eliminating the disease.

Professor Julie Attenborough (1960-2024)

Professor of Nursing, City St George's, University of London

As a Professor of Nursing, Julie specialised in mental health, work-based learning, and professional identity in nursing and higher education. Her lifelong and passionate advocacy of the NHS and role of healthcare students was at the heart of her work. She was widely respected for her contributions to the health education landscape across London and beyond.

Professor Rosemary Hollis (1952-2020)

Professor of Middle East Policy Studies, City St George's, University of London, 2008 – 2018

Rosemary was an expert in International Relations and the Middle East, and the first female Director of Research at Chatham House. At City she was Director of the Olive Tree Programme, which awarded scholarships to Israeli and Palestinian students and helped them develop a better understanding of each other. She was a mentor to many colleagues, and continues to inspire academics, students, journalists, policy makers and peacemakers around the world.
