The Sport and Leisure department offer a range of sporting facilities and activities. You can get involved in our social sport programme, represent City St George's at competitive sports, or focus on health and fitness in your own way.
BUCS
The majority of our representational teams play in British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) leagues against teams from other universities in the South East of England. BUCS is the national governing body for higher education sport in the UK, whose vision is ‘to enhance the student experience through sport’.
BUCS deliver more than 50 sports to over 160 universities. This comprises of a busy league programme of over 4,800 teams and over 100 championship knockout competition events every year.
Whether you are a member of a sports team or an individual athlete, you will have the chance to travel around the UK to other university campuses and compete at international standard facilities and iconic venues.
Team sports
There are many opportunities to represent City St George's in competitive team sports. Whether you are a complete beginner, have represented your school or college or even played at county or national level, you can get involved in one or more of our 26 teams.
The sports season typically runs from October through to March, with Cricket starting their season in May. All of our representational teams hold trials prior to the season commencing in October.
Individual sport
If your interest is in individual sport and you would like to represent City St George's as an individual on an elite stage, the Sport and Leisure team can discuss the opportunities and support available to you in terms of competition entry, travel costs and possible coaching advice.
You will need to present your qualifications, competition records and relevant UK or international rankings (if applicable).
Most individual sport athletes represent the university in at either BUCS Nationals or at the individual competitions run throughout the sporting year.
After success at university nationals, many have gone on to represent the university at European and International level in their respective disciplines.
City St George’s recent successes
Athletics
After competing in the BUCS High jump Outdoor Championships in her first year, Georgia Nwawulor switched to the indoor championships held at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield. With an impressive jump of 1.67m Georgia claimed the bronze medal, a feat she repeated again in the 2014-15 season.
BSc Business Management student Cheriece Hylton was part of the 400m relay sprint team that competed at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.
Clay Pigeon Shooting
BSc Business Studies student, Christoforos Konstantinidis claimed Silver at the World Univerisade Games in Poland in 2016. He then went on to qualify for the same games in Malaysia in March 2018.
Equestrian
After securing a first place spot in the individual Qualifiers held in Brooksbury College in March 2015, City St George's Ludvig Svennerstal earned himself a place in the National Championship finals held in June of the same year.
Ludvig travelled to Bishop Burton where he made the final day of competition, however, had to withdraw due to an international country representation qualifying event which fell on the same day.
Fencing
City St George's student Florian Minzat won gold in Sabre at the BUCS Nationals in Feb 2016, after claiming a silver 3 years prior at the same event.
Judo
Zulfukar Ablikim represented the university in the BUCS Individual Judo championships at Ponds Forge, Sheffield in February 2018.
Competing in the 60Kg KYU grade, Zulfukar impressed, taking the Gold medal in his first attempt in the competition.
Karate
After winning a bronze in his first year competing for City St George's in the 2018-19 season, BSc Banking and International Finance student, Bleu Parris won gold in the Senior Male Kumite -75kg at the BUCS Karate Nationals in the 2019-20 season. Bleu’s win resulted in him gaining qualification into the EUSA Combat Championships in Croatia in August 2019.
Bleu was also a member of the silver medal winning Basketball team in the South Eastern Conference Cup finals in the same year.
9 Ball Pool and Snooker
Postgraduate student Jared Holmes represented City St George's in the Home Nations Snooker championships in the 2019-20 season, reaching the semi-finals and earning himself a bronze medal.
Jared was also part of the winning England B team in the same tournament, beating England A to win the Home Nations Cup.
Rowing
City St George's GDL Masters student Rufus Scholefield was part of the Team GB Mens’s Eight team that won gold in the 2018 FISU World University Rowing Championship in Shanghai, China.
Taekwondo
Sophie Lam
First year student Sophie Lam won gold in the B Class -49kg Individual Sparring division at the British Student Taekwondo Federation Autumn Championships in November 2018.
Sophie also won gold in the 1st Kup -49kg Individual Sparring Division at the BSTF Spring Championships in March 2019.
The victory also resulted in her gaining qualification to the EUSA Championships in Croatia in August 2019.
Niels Roest
BSc Finance student Niels won a silver medal in both the Autumn Championships in November 2019 and the winter championships in February 2020.
In his third and final competition of the season, Niels claimed the gold at the spring championships in March, earning him qualification to the European universities games in Belgrade in July 2020. Unfortunately this event was postponed due to the pandemic.
Zaynab Farrugia
Zaynab medaled twice in the 2019-20 season, claiming bronze at both the autumn and spring BSTF championships.
Sabah Hussain
It was Silver for City St George's masters student Sabah Hussain in the BSTF winter championships in February 2020.
Viroshan Gnanapandithan
In his first time representing City St George's, Viroshan claimed the gold medal in the BSTF spring champs in March 2020, earning him automatic qualification to the European universities games in Belgrade in July 2020. Unfortunately this event was postponed due to the pandemic.
Awards ceremony
Our annual end of season awards ceremony is an opportunity for us to honour and recognise the successes and achievements of our Wolfpack community.
Held at various locations around London, the celebration event brings together our individual athletes, teams and coaches to recognise both the individuals that have made an impact on the sporting community, as well as the club and team achievements.
Varsity
Our annual Varsity series against the Kingston Cougars is one of the most popular in the Wolfpack sporting calendar. 36 teams compete in 10 different sports over three days of sporting action, in a bid to claim the trophy.
Even if you don’t want to compete there are lots of opportunities to get involved. We have lots of volunteer opportunities including being involved in the organising committee, event photography, match reporting, officiating, mascot roles, any many more
