French Beginners (part 2)

Do you know how to introduce yourself and others in French? Maybe you know how to make simple sentences in present tense and identify some masculine and feminine objects?

In part 2, you’ll learn vocabulary useful for making reservations, shopping and using public transport. You’ll learn to express likes and dislikes and talk about events in the ‘near future’, le future proche.

You’ll learn regular verbs ending in -ir and -re in the present tense and you’ll be introduced to the passé composé.

Over the 10 weekly lessons, you’ll begin to build your own sentences and practise using them in conversation, through role-play, activities and homework.

Who is it for?

This course is the second of three beginners modules. It is ideal if you are practically (but not quite) new to French (approximately 20 hours of learning). You may have completed part 1 of the course or studied a little French elsewhere. See our edibility section for more details.

Timetable

This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks.

By the end of this course, you will be able to

• book various services such as hotel, tours, car, restaurant, and transport
• shop confidently and express likes and dislikes
• express the near future, le future proche
• use essential verbs such as vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, savoir
• use pronominal verbs, adjectives and some prepositions.

Grammar

• present of modal verbs vouloir, pouvoir, devoir, savoir
• present tense of verbs ending in -ir and -re
• pronominal verbs or reflexive verbs se laver, s’habiller, se preparer
• direct and indirect pronouns le, la, l’, les and lui, leur
• further key words pourquoi, avec qui, depuis quand
• introduction to the perfect tense, passé composé
• consolidation of adjectives and their agreement
• further comparatives
• location or place adverbs.

You will be awarded an official City St George's, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.

Teaching

A mix of classroom activities makes learning fun and interactive.

Role-play, classroom discussion and pair and group work will improve your understanding. We will also work on pronunciation, intonation and grammar in context.

Assessment

You will be given weekly homework to practise what you have learned in class.

You‘ll need to have some understanding of simple French phrases and nouns and be familiar with, but not experienced in, using verbs in the present tense, as well as masculine and feminine forms.

This course is the right level if you have studied French for approximately 20 hours, or if you can:

• introduce yourself and briefly describe someone
• talk about your family and your profession
• tell the time and have some knowledge of numbers
• understand use of -er verbs in present
• understand some prepositions such as “in”, “under”, “next to”
• use masculine and feminine forms.
