French Beginners - Level 1 Course overview
Learn French for travel, working abroad or just for fun with our Beginners French evening course. You'll cover basic topics and useful for everyday conversation, including introducing yourself and your profession and making hotel or dinner reservations.
You'll begin with essential grammar, including regular verbs (-er, -ir and -re)in the present tense and key irregular verbs, such as être avoir, aller and faire.
As you progress, you'll learn to talk about past experiences using the passé composé, and discuss future plans using the near future tense.
You’ll develop essential speaking, listening, reading and writing skills with group exercises and weekly homework.
Delivered across six bite-size modules, this course will give you a strong foundation in beginners French. You will be working towards CEFR A1/2 of the Common European Framework Reference of languages, when combined with the French Elementary Level 2 course.
Who is it for?
This course is ideal for anybody taking their first step towards learning French. No prior knowledge is required.

What will I learn?
Throughout the year, you’ll learn to
- converse with others about yourself, jobs, interests and leisure activities
- improve pronunciation
- explore the culture of French-speaking countries
- describe past events and future plans,
- write an email and text messages.
Grammatical structures
- present tense
- regular verbs ending in -er -ir -re, basic irregular verbs including être, avoir, aller, faire, reflexive (se verbs)
- use of aller for the near future
- introduction to perfect tense (passé composé)
- masculine and feminine, singular and plural of nouns
Assessment and certificates
You will receive a Certificate of Completion from City St George’s, University of London, along with a digital badge for your LinkedIn profile.
To qualify, you must attend at least 70% of classes.
Teaching
Classes are highly interactive and include:

- Listening to audio materials (e.g. radio clips)
- Reading articles and texts
- Watching video content
- Digital learning tools to support your progress.
You’ll also explore French culture, current affairs and traditions alongside language learning.
