The course is available as initial or update sessions:

Ear Care - Foundations for Practice (CS6034)

• overview of ear anatomy and physiology
• otoscope technique
• client assessment and integration of the NEC guidelines
• practical session that includes examination using otoscopes and the use of ear irrigators.

Ear Care - Updates for Nurses (CS6035)

• revision of the anatomy and physiology of the ear, client assessment and common presenting conditions including infection and cerumen impaction
• best-practice update, including NICE and NEC guidelines
• practical review of otoscope technique, ear irrigation and aural toilet.
  
  Available dates: TBC

Who is it for?

This course in Ear Care is for registered nurses wanting to undertake assessment and management of cerumen impaction or as an update for those who are already undertaking these skills.

Ear Care - Foundations for Practice (CS6034)

By the end of this course, participates will be able to:

• Identify the correct technique to examine the ear
• Describe anatomical landmarks of the pinna and tympanic membrane
• Apply best-practice clinical guidelines to a client presenting for ear irrigation
• Demonstrate the development of skills in otoscopy, ear irrigation and aural toilet under supervision.

Ear Care - Updates for Nurses (CS6035)

By the end of this course, participates will be able to:

• Revise the anatomical landmarks of the pinna and tympanic membrane
• Identify common presenting problems for ear care in out of hospital settings
• Apply best-practice clinical guidelines to the assessment of a client presenting for ear irrigation
• Demonstrate the revision of skills in otoscopy, ear irrigation and aural toilet using up to date clinical guidance.

Teaching

Classroom activities include group discussion and quizzes.

The practical component includes the opportunity for supervised skills practice on attendees and simulation mannequins.

Assessment

Although there is no formal assessment requirement, attendees will be provided with group and individual verbal feedback on skills development.

A certificate of attendance for 7 hours of CPD will be provided upon completion of the course.

Registered Nurses currently on the NMC register.

Ear Care - Updates for Nurses (CS6035)

Registered Nurses currently on the NMC register who have previously undertaken ear care training.

English requirements

You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.

Students are recommended to revise the anatomy and physiology of the ear prior to the course and familiarise themselves with the best practice guidance on ear care available from the Primary Ear Care Centre.
