What will I learn?
We teach best practice for risk management, incorporating the latest developments in the discipline from the world’s leading business and financial organisations.
Risk management is a constantly developing field and one that’s at the heart of good governance and management practice. This short course will introduce you to the main concepts of risk management as well as emerging areas that you need to be aware of, such as cyber threats.
The course content includes:
- Skills in risk identification, quantification and control
- Wide range of techniques and approaches to assessing and controlling risk
- How to deal with major risks and extreme events
- Special approaches required for major projects, risk to reputation, outsourcing and cyber threats
- Understanding how risk management needs to be organised in a firm or public sector body
- How to work and communicate with the board, directors and managers on major risk issues to assist with decision making.
By the end of this course, you’ll be able to:
- Understand how to introduce the results of risk management into your decision making
- Carry out improved risk assessments
- Take a systematic approach to the management of all significant risks
- Use various techniques on the management reporting of risk exposure
- Understand how risk information is systematically captured, stored and analysed.
Assessment and certificates
There’s no formal assessment for this risk management short course. Students attending at least 70% of the lessons are eligible to receive the certificate of completion.
Teaching
Your time in the classroom will be split between lectures on different aspects of risk management, working through practical examples and exchanging experiences with your fellow students.
Module lead Edward Sankey has over 15 years of experience in the field of risk management. He has worked as a consultant in this area, both in the UK and internationally, as well as holding the position of Director of Operational Risk at a banking group.
He’ll encourage you to complete optional exercises between the sessions to improve your understanding of the concepts you discuss in the lectures.
In your final session of this risk management course, he’ll give you feedback on one of these exercises to help you hone your practical risk management skills.
Eligibility
No prior knowledge of risk management is required to enrol on this course, however, we do ask that you have a genuine interest in the subject.
You should have fluent spoken and written English to keep up with learning in class.
