Timetable

The Music Business Management course runs once a year in January and is delivered at our Northampton Square campus in central London. Teaching takes place every Monday at 18:30 for a 10 weeks.

Our Music Business Management courses teaching you the nuts and bolts of how the music industry operates, including royalties, record production, sync licencing and music publishing, streaming and merchandise.

Throughout the 10-weeks you will learn to:

• Map the role of artiste and repertoire within the record and music publishing industries
• Identify the key functions and responsibilities of the artiste and repertoire team
• Understand the anatomy of a hit song
• Prepare budgets for recording sessions
• Understand the process of recording
• Identify the main characteristics of music markets in the UK.

There will be comprehensive coverage throughout the course on the various Collection Societies, for example, MCPS, PRS, and PPL, who manage the legal rights to music and forms of royalties for writers and performers.

You will explore Major and Indie labels in detail and examine the practicalities and costs of music tours, such as promotion, merchandise and interviews.

You will be given examples of budget reports and other relevant information to be discussed. Materials are used to identify certain royalty rates and other figures discussed.

This course gives practical skills that can be applied to a job in the music industry rather than formal assessments or qualifications. You will be awarded an official City St George’s, University of London certificate for attendance of 70% or better.
