Effective Communication and Interpersonal Skills Course overview
Getting ideas across successfully requires an understanding of communication styles and behavioural flexibility.
Our entry-level Effective Communication and Interpersonal Skills short course helps you to improve your communication skills by noticing and responding to the non-verbal, subconscious cues of others.
Delivered over 10-week evening virtual classes, this beginner course in Effective Communication and Interpersonal Skills strengthens your communication across a variety of settings through a broad range of tools and techniques. You’ll be able to better express yourself, convey your ideas and develop confidence in social and professional situations.
Emphasis is placed on improving communication in the workplace particularly in business, however, the content can be applied to personal and social settings.
Please note: This is an experiential course at entry level, in which a broad range of topics is covered at introductory level. Delegates will be practising the techniques discussed with each other during class, in breakout room as groups or in pairs.
This course is not suitable for those requiring very in-depth, academic treatment of the subject, or at an advanced level.

What will I learn?
During the Effective Communication and Interpersonal Skills course, you will learn to:
- Build an understanding of your own personality and consider your interactions with other personality types
- Gain new insights into the meaning of your own and others' behaviour
- Fine-tune your perceptions of others' unconscious communications
- Extend your range of non-verbal responses through body language
- Build and maintain rapport with others through matching them in various ways, including behaviour and language patterns
- Observe eye accessing cues and understand their meaning
- Deal with conflict within a specific environment and consider cultural and environmental differences.
Assessment and certificates
Informal assessment will take place through group discussion and activities.
There will also be peer feedback where you will have an opportunity to learn about perceptions and how you have developed through the weeks.
There is no formal assessment and you are not given any formal qualifications on completion of the course. However, if you attend 70 percent of the classes you will be awarded an official City St George's, University of London certificate.
Eligibility
We do not ask for any qualifications to enrol in this beginner course, only an enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in the subject area.
You should be open to working with others in pairs or group work, and open to the ideas that are presented.
English requirements
You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
