German Beginners (part 3)

In part 3, you will learn how to describe your house, talk about different places and make comparisons. You’ll also learn to talk about past events using perfect tense and understand the rules of grammar for direct and indirect objects.

Part 3 will complete your beginners knowledge of German. By the end of the 10 weeks, you will have reached CEFR A1/A2 of the Common European Framework Reference of language learning.

You’ll learn from an experienced and qualified German tutor as part of an intimate and interactive group environment.

Who is it for?

Join us for part 3 if you have already completed part 2 of the beginners syllabus or you have roughly 40 hours of formal study. See our eligibility section.

Timetable

This course takes place one evening a week at 18:30 for 10 weeks. Delivered face-to-face at City St George's, University of London's central London campus.

By the end of this course, you will be able to

• describe what happened at the weekend
• talk about the more distant past
• say where things are and give directions
• describe people, places and events
• express opinions and discuss pros and cons.

Grammar

• perfect tense (regular and irregular), perfect tense with sein + haben
• more prepositions with case
• comparative and superlative
• adjective endings
• dative and accusative case in a sentence, direct and indirect object.

Chapters eight to ten of the Willkommen course book will be covered.

You will be awarded an official City, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.

Teaching

Classroom activities during this evening course will include:

• classroom discussion
• pair, group work and role-play
• pronunciation and intonation
• grammar in context.

You will be given weekly homework to practise what you have learned in class.

You’ll need some basic German knowledge to enrol on this course (approximately 40 hours of formal learning).

This course is the right level for you if you can:

• express likes and dislikes
• ask for and give prices when shopping
• understand word order and use separable verbs
• use measurement nouns, modal verbs, and prepositions with the accusative and dative case.

English requirements

You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
