Tissue Viability and Wound Care for HCSWs

This half day study day will ensure that you are up to date in the principles of tissue viability, and the principles of assessment and management of acute and chronic wounds. It will enhance the care you are able to deliver by ensuring your skills and knowledge are maintained, developed and up to date.

Who is it for?

This tissue viability course is for Health Care Support Workers who come into contact with wounds.

This tissue viability course runs over a half day.

The study day will cover the following topics:

• HCSW Code of Conduct and the Care Certificate
• overview of skin anatomy and physiology
• wound healing
• wound infections
• acute and chronic wound overview
• general principles of wound cleansing
• general principles of wound dressings
• introduction to the assessment and management of acute wounds
  • general principles
  • surgical wounds
  • traumatic wounds and burns
• introduction to the assessment and management of chronic wounds
  • general principles
  • leg ulcers
  • pressure ulcers
  • diabetic foot ulcers
• workshop
  • removal of sutures and Steristrips

The day will consist of lectures, with group discussion and a practical workshop.

There is no formal assessment for the participants on this course, but the day will be evaluated, and your comments will be received with thanks.

This course is worth 4 CPD hours and you will receive a certificate of attendance.

This course is provided by the School of Health & Psychological Sciences.

Applicants must be Health Care Support Workers, or working at a similar level, and have regular contact with wounds.

English requirements

You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
