French Intermediate - Level 4 Course overview
Are you comfortable communicating in French but looking to express yourself with greater precision and sophistication? Would you like to discuss current affairs, cultural topics and contemporary issues with confidence?
This challenging but rewarding course will help you progress from a competent user of French to a more fluent and independent speaker.
Through interactive online classes, you'll develop your ability to present ideas, construct arguments, justify opinions and engage in extended discussions.
You’ll explore a range of political, social and cultural topics, using authentic French language materials, including newspapers articles, literary extracts novels, audio recordings and video content.
Over 30-weeks, you’ll work towards communicating at at CEFR B1/B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Who is it for?
You should be able to communicate communicate confidently in everyday French at CEFR A2/B1 level. You may have completed our Level 3 French course, have a French A Level or have studied for around 180 hours. Unsure whether this course is right for you? What will I learn?
This course encourages you to use French creatively and confidently in a range of real-world situations. Through discussion, debate and analysis of authentic materials, you'll develop the language skills needed to communicate fluently on a wide range of topics.
By the end of this course you will be able to

- revision of all tenses, including present, future, conditional, perfect and imperfect
- basic subjunctive present, key phrases
- pronouns: possessive, simple relative pronouns qui/que/où/dont
- more complex interrogative structures
- comparative and superlative; adverbs
- restriction: ne…que
- conditional and past conditional
- subjunctive present
- consolidation of space and time connectors
- advanced composed relative pronouns
- impersonal forms and passive sentences
- subjunctive use and irregular constructions
- word order with adverbs, in negative sentences
- pronouns: en, y, demonstratives, interrogatives
- prepositions after certain verbs
- adverbs: consolidation and adding layers in complex structures such as subjunctive, irregular constructions, and imperative.
Assessment and certificates
You will receive a Certificate of Completion from City St George’s, University of London, along with a digital badge for your LinkedIn profile.
To qualify, you must attend at least 70% of classes.
Teaching
Classes are highly interactive and include:
- Small group work and role-play
- Listening to audio materials (e.g. radio clips)
- Reading articles and texts
- Watching video content
- Digital learning tools to support your progress
You’ll also explore French culture, current affairs and traditions alongside language learning.
Eligibility
It is the right level if you:
- have completed our French Lower Intermediate Level 3, or equivalent course elsewhere
- can communicate at A2/B1 level, according to the Common European Framework of languages
- have a A-level in French
- have studied French formally for around 180 hours.
You should already know:
- of the subjunctive, the use of gerunds and since/for/during
- how to speak on most daily topics
- how to understand the content of newspapers.
Additional requirements
To enrol onto the Intermediate French course, you must:
- be age 18 or over
- have basic IT skills and a reliable internet connection to access lessons and course materials.
English requirements
You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
