AutoCAD – Advanced Professional Skills Course overview
The AutoCAD course is divided into two blocks of six weeks, with each class lasting two hours. The first block, AutoCAD – Introduction, is delivered during the autumn and spring terms. This second block, AutoCAD – Advanced Professional Skills, is taught during the summer term.
AutoCAD – Introduction, covers the core principles and fundamental tools required to create and modify drawings using AutoCAD. Participants will develop essential skills and gain confidence in producing accurate 2D CAD drawings.
AutoCAD – Advanced Professional Skills, focuses on more advanced features and techniques. This includes developing professional-level skills to produce precise and detailed CAD drawings in both 2D and 3D, enhancing overall technical capability and industry readiness.

This course in AutoCAD is for those looking to learn the core aspects of using AutoCAD to produce quality technical drawings. It is aimed at students who have little or no experience of AutoCAD. Your work or studies may bring you into contact with CAD drawings and you require the understanding of the programme to give you the confidence to work with and use it.
Classes are taught using AutoCAD on a PC but is compatible with AutoCAD on a Mac (although you may find the interface is slightly different). After enrolment, students can use their City email account* to register and download the student version of AutoCAD for free. For information about system requirements please see the Autodesk website.
We recommend that students have AutoCAD installed on their laptops and use it during the classes. Information on downloading AutoCAD (which is free for students) can be found under the Recommended Reading tab.

AutoCAD – Introduction (6 weeks)
- AutoCAD overview and interface
- Drawing and modification
- Drawing management and drawing styles
- PaperSpace and ModelSpace - Viewports
- Blocks and WBlocks,
- Xref drawings – enabling two or more drawings/users to be linked together and worked on at the same time.
AutoCAD – Advanced professional skills (6 weeks)
- Xref drawings – enabling two or more drawings/users to be linked together and worked on at the same time.
- Dynamic blocks and blocks with attributes
- Templates, layers, dimensions, text, annotative – creating a personal CAD template
- Line type, script files, plot styles, colour dependent plot styles
- 3D – Interface, drawing solid modelling – Boolean commands
- 3D – Rendering, view projection – materials, lighting
By the end of the course, you will be able to
Confidently produce and present 2D and 3D Drawings that are well managed and correctly drawn, dimensioned and annotated using AutoCAD features and templates.
Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City St George's, University of London certificate if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.
Assessment
Informal assessment will take place during the classes. The classes cover specific topics during each class which is supported by Drawing activities to support and embed skills and knowledge. We have several longer drawing tasks which combine many of the skills learnt, Students can undertake these longer drawing tasks independently which can be assessed against professional standards
Eligibility
Computer literacy and some involvement in a profession where CAD is used.
English requirements
Applicants must be proficient in written and spoken English.

The tutor will provide materials in class.
Students can download a free student version of AutoCAD from the Autodesk website. They will need to register with Autodesk using their City St George's and provide proof of enrolment.
