Russian Intermediate (Full Syllabus) Course overview
Comprising three 10-week modules, this intermediate to advanced Russian course will improve your reading, speaking, writing and listening skills. You’ll learn new vocabulary for a wide array of scenarios useful for conversation.
Topics include talking about your daily routine and activities, planning celebrations and discussing the future. You’ll use grammar structures, such as adverbs and imperatives, reflexive verbs, the passive voice and open questions.
Newspapers, literature and videos will help you learn and also provide a focus for discussing wider Russian cultural and political affairs.
Who is it for?
Join us here if you can communicate at CEFR A2 level (approximately 120 hours of prior learning). You may have completed our lower intermediate syllabus or have a good or recent GCSE. More information can be found in the eligibility section.

Timetable
The course includes 60 hours of learning and is taught across three terms, starting in October and finishing in July.
October – December (Part 1)
One evening per week (two-hour lessons) for ten consecutive weeks.

One evening per week (two-hour lessons) for ten consecutive weeks.
Easter break
April/May – July (Part 3)
One evening per week (two-hour lessons) for ten consecutive weeks.

Assessment and certificates
You will be awarded an official City St George’s, University of London certificate on completion of the course if you attend over 70 per cent of the classes. The course is not formally accredited.

Any assessment will be informal to help you evaluate your own progress.
Teaching
This course is designed to develop your skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing the language.
Interactive games and roleplays build your vocabulary in both colloquial and more formal versions of the language. Working in pairs and small groups you’ll form sentences and write short stories where everyone contributes.
Digital learning aids feature prominently, and include newspapers, audio and video clips.
Eligibility
If you’ve already studied Russian for around 120 hours and can follow discussions on topics of current interests and understand Russian newspapers, this course is for you.
It is the right level if you:
- have completed our lower intermediate syllabus, or an equivalent course with a different provider
- can communicate at CEFR A2 level, according to the Common European Framework of languages
- have a good or recent GCSE.
You should already know:
- how to talk about daily routines
- how to discuss plans for going out
- how to read some Russian literature
- ordinal numbers
- comparative adjectives and adverbs.
English requirements
You will need a good level of spoken and written English to enrol on this course.
