Critical Approaches in Advanced Practice

This course provides a critical approach to advanced practice issues across health and social care contexts.

Through a critical exploration of live, practice, political and service issues, the course aims to enhance your confidence and capability to work at an advanced level within your discipline-specific field of expertise. This means being able to measure, monitor and evaluate service-led innovation, integrate contemporary health and social trends as a transformational leader, all of which skills are central to advancing the health and social care experience, to quality care delivery and to service reform agendas.

This course is designed for managers, clinicians and professional services staff wanting to develop their critical, analytic and reflective skills in a practice-based context.

This short course module is designed to be flexible in allowing you to study and reach your goals at your own pace. Our health CPD courses are credit-bearing modules that contribute to a University degree or award.

Transfer course credits towards postgraduate taught degree

As a health care professional, once you've completed this course you could offset 15 credits as part of a postgraduate programme, continuing your study with further modules to make up a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) 60 credits, Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) 120 credits or Master of Science (MSc) 180 credits qualification (all credits must be awarded within five years of study commencing).

Teaching

This course will be shared across all disciplines working at an appropriate level of practice in health and social care. Sessions will be presented as critical creative experiences, led by participants and facilitated by lecturers. The course will run over one term, both live and asynchronously online, to ensure theoretical learning and practice enhancement is integrated and embedded into the practice contexts.

Active learning principles (incorporating experiential, inquiry-led learning) will dominate how this course is delivered. This approach brings together professional practice expertise, artistry and personal integrity within a trans-disciplinary learning environment. Aspects of advanced level practice will be utilised to influence course content, as arising from students’ experience and learning requirements.

Assessment

The assessment for this course is a 3,000-word critical review of the literature relating to one aspect of one of the three course themes and how you would implement the identified evidence in your own practice.

The pass mark is 50%.

The course is worth 15 credits at Level 7 and can be taken as a stand-alone CPD course, or as an optional module from a range of PG Dip/MSc programmes across the School of Health & Psychological Sciences.

Credits

This course is worth 15 credits toward eligible programmes.

• A current professional registration with a relevant professional/statutory body or equivalent.
• At least one years' relevant clinical experience as a health or social care practitioner.
• A satisfactory academic reference and a satisfactory clinical reference.

English requirements

If your first language is not English, one of the following is required:

• A first degree from a UK university
• A first degree from an overseas institution recognised by City, University of London as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions from Australia, Canada or the United States of America.
• International English Language Test Service (IELTS) a score of 7.0 is required with no subtest below 7.0
• Pearson Test of English (Academic) score 72 required
• TOEFL 100 overall with 24 in Writing, 20 in Listening, 19 Reading and 20 Speaking
• Other evidence of proficiency in the English language, which satisfies the board of studies concerned, including registration with your professional regulator.
