Chinese Mandarin Lower Intermediate - Level 3 Course overview
The Level 3 Lower Intermediate Chinese course will enhance your ability to communicate in Mandarin by adding detail and cohesion in your use of the language.
You will re-examine some familiar topics and explore new everyday scenarios using more advanced vocabulary and connectives in communicative tasks. You will work toward communication with more connected and nuanced description, narration, explanation, and opinion.

The full course includes 60 hours of online learning and is taught across three modules.

What will I learn?
By the end of this course, you will be able to
- Communicate in wider real-life situations.
- Narrate experiences, describe problems, compare choices, give simple advice and express preferences or opinions.
- Understand longer dialogues and short narratives
- Listen and read for both gist and detail.
- Character learning continues through recognition, handwriting of selected high-frequency forms, radical awareness and vocabulary recycling.
Grammatical structures
- More complex complements: result, direction, degree, duration, frequency and potential expressions in context.
- Expanded sentence patterns and conditional patterns.
- Aspect and narrative control and sequencing of events.
- Comparison, emphasis and opinion and advice structures.
- Text cohesion and paragraph-level connectors.
Assessment and certificates
You will receive a Certificate of Completion from City St George’s, University of London, along with a digital badge for your LinkedIn profile.
To qualify, you must attend at least 70% of classes.
Teaching
Classes are highly interactive and include:

You’ll also explore Chinese culture, current affairs and traditions alongside language learning.
Eligibility
It is the right level if you have either:
- If you have completed our elementary course or studied at another provider for around 120 hours, you can join us here.
- have a solid grasp of Pinyin, understand rules on Chinese character formation and be able to write basic characters.
You should already be able to:
- discuss your daily routine
- talk about your profession
- talk about you friends and family
- use pronouns, prepositions and imperatives.

- be age 18 or over
