    The MA in Public Relations and Strategic Communications equips you with a range of communication skills to excel in this dynamic and growing field.

    You will learn how to use communication tools to influence attitudes and individuals and learn the ethical obligations that come with this knowledge. You will progress to mastering media relations, reputation management, and social media/community management.

    Electives like health or political communications allow you to customize your knowledge and you have a chance to test your skills in professional setting with a placement in the industry.

    Students on this course will have the opportunity to connect with industry in a structured way, through guest speakers, bespoke placements, field trips and networking events. Our staff have established strategic partnerships with London-based PR and Marketing Communication agencies, such as Fully Vested.

    This programme is aimed at students who may not have a background in business, marketing or advertising, but who are keen communicators and savvy users of contemporary media.

    Whether you are a recent graduate or looking to change your career pathway, this MA equips you with the expertise and skills required to make a significant impact in the ever-evolving world of public relations and communications.

    • Persuasive Communication (15 credits)

      Organisations need communication professionals who master the art of rhetoric and the science of persuasion. This module aims to help you hone your skills how to persuade audiences directly, in public contexts, and indirectly, through promotional practices (e.g. ads, earned and shared content).

    • Pitching Campaigns (15 credits)

      Co-designed and co-delivered with industry professionals, this module provides you with a clear understanding of the pitching process in communication industries. You will plan a communication campaign, based on a set industry brief.

    • Digital Content Creation (15 credits)

      This module aims to help you develop sensitivity to the demands, skills and possibilities of digital content creation. You will execute a short digital content project, gaining confidence on how to best commission and evaluate audiovisual media production in a professional context.

    • Media Relations (15 credits)

      You will develop a critical awareness and practical understanding of working with media in public relations, such as: How do PR professionals ensure adequate media coverage for an organisation or a celebrity? How do media narratives impact an organisation’s activities, and most importantly, its reputation?

    • Reputation management (15 credits)

      Controversial social issues, polarised publics and stakeholders with conflicting interests are crucial challenges for organisations to navigate. This module integrates cutting-edge theories in PR and strategic communication to address strategically real-life reputation problems.

    • Social media and community management (15 credits)

      As brands and organisations continue to invest in both their on- and offline communities, this module teaches you how to create and ethically disseminate the engaging social media content required for successful community management amongst online publics and brand communities.

    Core elective modules

    • Fashion Communication (15 credits)

      Focusing on the specifics of how fashion is promoted through media and communication forms, this module helps you better understand the cultural relevance of fashion via the professional contexts and formats of fashion communication.

    • Political Communication (15 credits)

      This module familiarizes you with the specific functions and forms of political communication, examining various aspects of government information policy and the relation between government, the media and the public.

    • Health Communication (15 credits)

      The module introduces you to the field of health communications, providing both a historical and contemporary context. It will critically examine the field within the post-Covid 19 context and focus on critical perspectives on health communications.

    Elective modules

    • Entrepreneurship in the Media and Creative Industries (15 credits)

      You will develop a critical understanding of how to create business opportunities and innovate within the cultural and creative industries. The aim is to give you the knowledge and skills you need to start a business or agency in the media, communication and creative sectors.

    • Professional Placement (15 credits)

      The Professional Placement module gives you the opportunity to work in your chosen field, apply the knowledge and skills you are developing on your course and reflect upon elements of good professional practice in your organisation’s workplace.

    Independent project

    • Independent Project (60 credits)

      The independent project is a substantial applied research or professional project that enables you to achieve a high level of understanding in your chosen subject area and ideally grant you a writing sample or even portfolio of professional work that you can use as a springboard for the next step in your career.

    Teaching and assessment

    Lectures will provide you with the explanation of key content areas.

    Most modules also offer small seminars and workshops, where you can develop your understanding of key texts and ideas through discussion and debate as well as hone your practical and professional skills.

    This versatility of approach will not only facilitate discussion but allow you to generate your own content, with different audiences, forms and functions in mind.

    Assessment methods

    The programme assesses your knowledge of key concepts and creative practice via a mix of coursework assignments.

    These assessment forms are designed to simulate the tasks you will be performing in the workplace and include:

    • creative portfolios including films and adverts
    • press releases and other forms of PR copy
    • critical/reflective essays
    • presentations, industry reports, marketing plans
    • other projects and individual and group assignments.

    In your projects, you will develop skills in providing and receiving peer review. Individual and group project reports and presentations will assess both creative and professional content and your presentation skills.

    English language requirements

    If you are an applicant whose first language is not English, the following qualifications are required:

    • IELTS: Overall score 6.5 and a minimum of 5.5 in each subset
    • TOEFL test with a score of at least 90, with a minimum of 17 in Listening, 18 in Reading, 17 in Writing and 20 in Speaking.

    Application process

    You will need to submit:

    • A completed application form (either electronically or by post).
    • A certified copy of your undergraduate academic results and degree certificate. If you have not yet finished your course, please provide a provisional transcript of marks received to date. You will be required to send us your degree transcript as soon as it is available.
    • Proof of English proficiency (if you are not a native English speaker, or someone who has not been taught in English for your first-degree subject).
    • A personal statement of around 500 words on your academic and relevant professional experience to date and how it informs your intention to undertake this course. In addition, you may wish to outline your vision for how the degree will feed into your research or professional career. You will need to ensure your statement is specific to our course and institution, and not generic. You may be asked to provide further details if your statement is too generic.
    • You may find it beneficial to upload a copy of your CV highlighting any relevant work experience related to this subject.
