International Journalism MA Course overview

Benefits of this course

You will develop skills in text, broadcast and online journalism and learn how they function in a global context.

Our programme enables you to study news in all its forms and grow your understanding of international journalism from a UK perspective.

While you will practise in different media of journalism (text, broadcast and online), you will additionally explore journalism theories and concepts and reflect on your work. You also explore the contemporary global domain of journalism.

You will learn from working with people from the UK, Europe and beyond and benefit from our location in London, a global media city.

The course enables you either to start a career in journalism, or to undertake continuing professional development.

It is suitable, therefore, for those with the required academic qualifications but without any prior experience in journalism, and, more exceptionally, for those with appropriate experience in journalism but who do not hold the required academic qualifications.

Graduates from the course overwhelmingly enter the workplace although some go on to further study.

Award

You can select to apply for one of the available exit points for this course.

Teaching and assessment

Your learning will have an emphasis the development of practical journalism skills.

Our staff are all professional journalists in print, broadcast or online, and we focus on "learning by doing." You will cover real stories and produce newspapers, run a radio station, broadcast on the internet, and produce television news and multimedia websites.

You have the chance to meet, listen to and question journalists and others working in the media. This helps you to build a strong understanding of ethical issues in journalism, the media and international reporting.

Throughout the practice-based elements of the course you will be treated as a professional journalist. Our programme is intensive and teaching hours can resemble those of a full-time job.

We use lecture theatres for modules such as Global Journalism and Society and Ethics, Rules and Standards. But most modules involve small-group workshops.
