Podcasting MA Course overview

Benefits of this course

The MA in Podcasting is a hands-on course. You will learn how to craft compelling podcasts and develop the skills to publish your product, find and build an audience, and carve out a career.

You will learn a combination of technical skills in audio and video production, social media, branding and marketing along with the business skills you will need to target audiences, develop a brand and run your own independent business.

The course draws on the reputation of City St George's Journalism with training in Law and Ethics, we will work in partnership with our new Centre of Podcast Excellence and in our own specialist podcast studios.

The course was designed by an industry leading steering group who also contribute throughout the year. Students all have work placements within top production companies during term two. Previous graduates are now working for Goalhanger, Fresh Air, Persephonica, ITN, the New York Times and many others.

Who is this course for?

This course is for anyone who loves podcasting. You may be a beginner who is passionate about podcasts, or you may have audio or journalism experience but want to add extra dimensions.

Master of Arts (MA)

Duration:

  • Full-time: 12 months,
  • Part-time: 24 months,

  • 10 in total
  • Core modules: 8
  • Elective modules: 2

For the MA Podcasting you must complete all the Core modules and then choose one of the elective specialisms plus one of: Data Journalism, Political Headlines, or Voice and Presenting skills.

All MA Journalism courses at City St George's offer a Specialism module as an elective. These modules give you an opportunity to learn about a journalism specialism and develop practical skills. Find out more about MA Journalism specialism electives at City St George's.

Core modules

Through all core modules you will develop the Graduate Attributes, five core skillsets that will help you launch a successful, fulfilling career. Find out more about the Graduate Attributes.

  • Audio Storytelling (30 credits)

    This module will explore structures and conventions of audio story telling. You will have the chance to experiment with different narrative styles and understand how to develop small ideas into fully formed stories. This module will explore news, sport, comedy, history, performance and fiction.

  • Audio Production (15 credits)

    This module will focus on the recording and processing of sound for simple podcast products. A very hands-on module which allows you to gain skills with recording equipment and editing software. This module forms the foundation of the second term module Pitch to Product.

  • UK Media Law (15 credits)

    In this module you will explore the characteristics of UK law and the legal system relating to podcasting and journalism.

  • Journalism Ethics (15 credits)

    This module will support you in placing podcasting and journalism practices, processes and products in their wider contexts, enabling you to be an ethical and reflexive practitioner. You will have the opportunity to explore ethical issues as they affect podcasters and journalists, including yourself.

  • Social Community and Multimedia Management (15 credits)

    This module prepares you to manage, develop and produce a range of social media and online video content. It will help you understand the importance of building engagement with specific audiences and using the full range of social content to develop a sense of brand.

  • Audience Strategy (15 credits)

    Building on the learning from Social, Community and Management Media, this module centres on the role of audience development and engagement.

  • From Pitch to Product (15 credits)

    Building on the Audio Production module, you will add more complex production techniques in both audio and video. We also focus on the skills to pitch a concept to a commissioner, develop a business model for your product, understand the legal constraints around music, images and performance rights and understand how to publish the final product

    This module is offered as an elective choice. In this module you will explore the characteristics of politics and political structures in the UK – what politicians do and say – and how to make stories out of them.

  • Data Journalism (15 credits)

    This module is offered as an elective choice. It will introduce data journalism skills, with a focus on getting and telling original stories from datasets. There's a strong focus on getting the data before preparing it for visualisation as part of the story-telling process.

  • Media Identity and Diversity (15 credits)

  • Entrepreneurship in the Media and Creative Industries (15 credits)

  • Special Study: Short Fiction (15 credits)

Elective modules

  • Lifestyle Specialism (15 credits)

    This specialism explores a wide range of subject matter, including food, travel, fashion, well-being and real-life, as well as analysing broader themes in modern culture.

  • Arts and Culture Specialism (15 credits)

    You’ll tackle pitching, reviewing, interviewing, profiling and commentary in the fields of cinema, theatre, music (pop and classical), books and contemporary cultural issues.

  • Humanitarian Reporting Specialism (15 credits)

    Topics covered include International Aid, protection of children and vulnerable adults, reporting at home and in the field, and disaster reporting. 

  • Sports Specialism (15 credits)

    The specialism will cover the key elements of sports journalism: live events, interviews, press conferences, features and news reporting. You will learn about the craft as well as the art of sports writing. 

  • Political Reporting (15 credits)

  • Reporting the Middle East Specialism (15 credits)

    This module provides you an opportunity to explore political and media issues in and around the Middle East. It will focus on the contemporary Middle East and on the various ways of thinking about, analysing and reporting on or from that region. 

  • Security and Crime Specialism (15 credits)

    Learn how to report on UK based terrorism - from MI5 to the extremists themselves. On crime it covers all the angles – the police, criminals, crime trends, courts, and how to cover a breaking story.

  • Health and Science Specialism (15 credits)

    This module gives you a thorough grounding in how to report on topics such as technological advances and the challenges presented by artificial intelligence, genetic engineering, climate change and Covid-19. 

  • Reporting North America Specialism (15 credits)

    This module is designed to enable you to deepen your understanding and experience of reporting on North America as a correspondent. You will analyse the role and practices of specialist journalists covering North America, and plan, develop and produce journalistic reports about the area. 

  • Reporting on Identity and Underrepresented Communities (15 credits)

    We’ll cover techniques and tools essential to reporting on stories related to race, gender, LGBTQ+ communities, class, disabilities and other underrepresented groups.

Final project

  • Final Project (30 credits)

    An opportunity to put everything you have learned on the course into practice. Covering a topic of your choice you will produce a solo or team podcast project that will showcase the skills you have developed on the course. You will be taught through one-to-one supervisions.

Teaching and assessment

You will learn practical and core skills in small workshops, lectures, and  production days along with masterclasses with leading podcast creators.

Some modules run in lecture theatres with students from other City St George's courses, but most involve small groups to allow you develop skills and knowledge.

Your work will cover a range of podcast genres, which may include news, sport, arts and culture, true crime, interviews, Q and A shows and even comedy.

You will also learn to research audiences and markets, pitch and commission podcasts and develop effective business models.

We will look at the importance of branding and using visuals and video in your productions.

The course is delivered by a range of professionals who have worked in the field in the UK and internationally and supported by guest speakers from across the industry.

You will be assessed through course work, presentations, podcast products, some written tests and essays and a final project.

Visiting lecturers

The following is a list of our visiting lecturers for the academic year 2023/24:

Mark Sandell is an award-winning podcaster and radio producer who has worked across an enormous list of broadcast outlets including major BBC and commercial networks. He is the director of an independent production company that has developed podcasts on such varied subjects as Louis Armstrong, true crime and breast cancer.

Al Booth is a hugely experienced audio and event producer as a freelancer and with the BBC where she ran the Radio 2 specialist content including musical theatre, jazz and country music. At Radio 2 and 6 music she ran programme teams as diverse as Steve Wright in the Afternoon, Jo Whiley, Cerys Matthews and Graham Norton.

Julian Worricker is a well-known face and voice for the BBC where he has is one of the main anchors on news programmes on radio and TV. He works as a specialist presenting and voice coach across the programme.

Podcasting is one of the fastest growing media industries.

This new course will build on the success of our MA Journalism courses whose students are in leading roles at major production houses.

Podcast producers work within mainstream media (BBC, Global, Bauer, Sky, Channel 4, NPR etc),digital media (Apple, Spotify, etc.) and in business and the wider communication industry (eg campaigning, NGOs, politics ).

    Applicants should hold an upper second class honours degree, or the equivalent from an internationally recognised institution. Consideration may also be given to mature applicants with relevant work experience.

    Pre-requisites

    Applicants should demonstrate a knowledge of podcasting, and a strong interest in one or more podcasting genres. We especially welcome those with work experience in radio or audio.

    Other suitable qualifications

    As well as new graduates, we also welcome applications from mature applicants with substantial work experience in radio and/or television journalism.

English language requirements

If you're a national of a majority English-speaking country, or have previously completed a university degree (or equivalent) in one, you will not need to prove your knowledge of English to apply for the course.

The government provides a list of recognised majority English-speaking countries.

Otherwise, to participate fully in the collaborative learning process in the School of Communication & Creativity, you must provide evidence that you meet the courses English language requirements.

  • IELTS academic test with an overall score of 7.0, with no less than 7.0 in the writing subtest and no less than 6.5 in any other subtest.
  • TOEFL test with a score of at least 100, with a minimum of 21 in Listening, 23 in Reading, 24 in Writing and 23 in Speaking.

To apply for this course, please fill out your application online and upload all relevant documents, including:

  • Personal statement - outlining why you wish to take this particular course. You may wish to explain how the course will feed into your future career plans and/or your research interests. You could describe any relevant professional or academic experience you currently have, and explain how it informs your intentions to study. You will need to make sure your statement is specific to our course and institution, and not generic. You may be asked to provide further details if your statement is too generic.
  • Degree Transcript/Provisional Transcript – For any and all completed degree courses, we need your final transcript of marks with a clear overall grade. If you have not yet finished your course, please provide a provisional transcript of marks received to date. If your transcript is not in English, please provide an official translation as well as the original documents.
  • A copy of your valid passport.
  • Accepted proof of English Language Proficiency if required.
  • If you are an overseas applicant, a completed Immigration History Form along with any current or past UK visas you may hold, and/or biometric residency cards.

If you do not include all the necessary documents listed above your application may be returned to you and the admission process could be delayed.
