    If you want to shape the future of the cultural sector, the MA Culture, Policy and Management is for you.

    City have run courses in arts and cultural management for over 45 years. The variety of roles and social, political and cultural aims that make up the creative economy make it a complex and exciting world to work in and influence. This master's develops both the core and the transferable skills that are in demand in the cultural and creative Industries, including understanding and supporting innovation and creativity.

    This master's will help you develop both the core and the transferable skills that are in demand in the complex and exciting world of the creative economy, including understanding and supporting innovation and creativity.

    This programme will help you understand the big picture of the creative economy to make connections between different fields and activities, so you can become a competent professional ready to start, continue or change your career.

    On completion of the course, you will be able to evaluate and integrate the theories and practices of culture, policy and management. The student experience runs through everything we do, from the structure of the course itself to our discussions and tutorials.

    This master's is ideal for those who have an undergraduate degree and a passion for the arts, or for those coming from a social science perspective on policy and management. The key thing is a desire to work with the creative economy.

    Elective modules: Students choose electives to total 60 credits.

    This MA is structured around four core modules which act as the spine of the programme.

    In addition, you will choose four further elective modules to reflect your particular interests.

    The MA culminates in a 13,000 - 15,000 word dissertation, which can help to both synthesise your learning and act as a ‘calling card’ to your new job.

    This programme is part of the suite of activities of the UNESCO Chair in Global Creative Economy.

    • Culture (15 credits)

      This module explores ideas of what culture is, and the intellectual foundations of the study of culture, and it’s institutionalisation in academe; plus a range of important strands of the development of contemporary thought in relation to culture, economy and society.

    • Cultural Policy (15 credits)

      This module introduces the core debates around cultural policy. It outlines the emergence of cultural policy as a field of study and its relationship to a variety of academic areas, including political science, arts management and cultural studies.

    • Managing and Leading People in Media and Creative Industries (15 credits)

      This module introduces you to the knowledge and skills needed to understand marketing in cultural organisations. It explores the factors that influence cultural consumption in its diverse forms and examines how cultural and creative organisations market themselves effectively.

      This core module provides you with the opportunity to undertake your own independent investigation into a topic or research question of your choice within your area of culture and the creative industries – it consolidates your learning, research and interests and complements your module work.

    Teaching and assessment

    You will learn through lectures, seminars, tutorials and visits, as well as verbal and written feedback.

    You will acquire new skills through assignments and group-learning activities such as workshops or field based activities, but your own personal research is also important.

    You will be able to apply your essay questions and academic work to the real world. The cultural policy module allows you to prepare a policy brief for a public institution of your choice. You advise on a specific policy, law or programme related to art and culture.

    We offer considerable study independence and flexibility throughout the course, so you should develop strong ideas about how you intend to investigate your subject and navigate your professional direction.

    English language requirements

    If you're a national of a recognised majority English-speaking country as defined by the government, or have previously completed a university degree (or equivalent) in one, you will not need to prove your knowledge of English to apply for the course.

    Please note that if your country is not defined as majority-English-speaking by the government you will need to demonstrate you meet the English language requirements for the course.

    This course requires the equivalent of an IELTS academic test with an overall score of 6.5 and a minimum of 5.5 in each subtest.

    We will also accept an equivalent score in any of the tests listed under the English language requirements section.

    You must have completed the qualification no more than two years prior to the start of the course.

    Application process

    When applying, you will need to submit:

    • A completed application form.
    • A certified copy of your undergraduate academic results and degree certificate. If you have not yet finished your course, please provide a provisional transcript of marks received to date. You will be required to send us your degree transcript as soon as it is available.
    • Proof of English proficiency (if required; see English language requirements).
    • A personal statement of around 500 words on your academic and relevant professional experience to date and how it informs your intention to undertake this course. In addition, you may wish to outline your vision for how the degree will feed into your research or professional career. You will need to ensure your statement is specific to our course and institution, and not generic. You may be asked to provide further details if your statement is too generic.
    • You may find it beneficial to upload a copy of your CV highlighting any relevant work experience related to this subject.
