    You will benefit in various ways from this Diplomacy and Foreign Policy MA. Your analytical capacity and ability to critically evaluate connections between complex issues in foreign policy and diplomacy will be significantly enhanced.

    We will help you to develop confidence in analysing how states meet their foreign policy goals, how foreign policy and diplomacy impacts global conflict, and how diplomatic and foreign policy forums have evolved.

    Confidence in your critical abilities and in-depth knowledge of the subject matter will allow you to make an immediate impact in the workplace after you graduate.

    This Master's in Diplomacy and Foreign Policy course is ideal if you are aiming for employment in the diplomatic service, journalism or international organisations, such as the United Nations.

    You might also be targeting non-governmental organisations (NGOs), such as Human Rights Watch or Oxfam.

    You might be interested in a career in research or consulting, for example, advising on such issues as stabilisation, political risk, or public diplomacy.

    • Strategy, Diplomacy and Decision-Making (15 credits)

      This module explores practical approaches to the formulation of policy options, decision-making and negotiation in both the public and private sectors. It is highly participative and experiential.

    • Foreign Policy Analysis (15 credits)

      The module covers a variety of issues and problems in the study of foreign policy by engagement with the theoretical and practical dimensions of Foreign Policy Analysis, a salient strand of International Relations theory.

    Elective modules

    • Global Capitalism: Past, Present, Future (15 credits)

      This course traces the evolution of global capitalism from its structure in the interwar era to its present-day globalising tendencies. It focuses on three interrelated themes: the internationalisation of production, the globalisation of finance and the changing nature of political authority, or the state

    • Political Economy of Global Finance (15 credits)

      This module provides you with a critical review of the key institutions and processes in the global financial system, with a particular emphasis on the connections between these institutions and processes of the development in the international political system

    • Advocacy for Political Change (15 credits)

      This module will equip you with knowledge of the history, theory, and tools of analysis of political mobilisation and social change. You will gain a critical understanding of the practice of political campaigning and advocacy; and explore the role of political communication as an essential tool of campaigning.

    • Religion in Global Politics

      This module is designed to provide you with a critical understanding of the relevance and multiple roles of religion in contemporary global politics. Note that this not a module on religious history.

    • Global Governance (15 credits)

      This module critically examines the changing character of governance in global politics. It focuses on the key actors and mechanisms involved in attempts to govern, regulate and control processes and issues in contemporary global politics

    • Theories of Global Political Economy

      This module introduces students to different theoretical traditions within global political economy (GPE). It provides in-depth knowledge of the rich intellectual history of GPE as it has developed over time. Some of the foundational questions explored in the module include: What does it mean to theorize and what are the essential building blocks of any GPE theory? When and where do we locate the origins of GPE? What are the normative and political assumptions embedded within competing accounts of the field’s inception? What are the strengths and weaknesses of various theoretical approaches in GPE?

    • Global Ethics: Principles, Power and Politics (15 credits)

      This module introduces you to the traditions of ethical thought in international politics by looking at pressing issues in today’s world, such as state and non-state violence, poverty and suffering and issues of political inequality in an hierarchical international system.

    • Human Rights and the Transformation of World Politics (15 credits)

      This module provides you with an advanced overview of the theory, history and practice of human rights, with a focus on how the development of human rights has changed the nature of world politics in the 20th and 21st centuries.

    • Theories of International Politics (15 credits)

      The module provides an inclusive view of theoretical approaches to the study of international relations/politics by allowing you to examine dominant and contemporary theories, such as realism, liberalism, Marxism as well as post-structuralism, feminism, green politics, post-colonialism, and constructivism.

    • The Politics of Forced Migration (15 credits)

      This module provides an intellectually demanding and interdisciplinary route to understanding forced migration in contexts of conflict, repression, natural disasters, environmental change and development policy-making

    • Comparative Capitalism (15 credits)

      This module investigates the historical origins, evolution, and contemporary challenges of capitalist models, with case studies from the US, Europe, Asia, and beyond. By examining the intricate interactions between business, state, and society within diverse capitalist frameworks, you will develop a nuanced understanding of how they shape economic development, social inequality, and democratic governance.

    • Political Communication (15 credits)

      This module familiarizes you with the specific functions and forms of political communication, examining various aspects of government information policy and the relation between government, the media and the public.

    • Criminal Minds (15 credits)

      This module is intended to do two things. First, develop an applied understanding of the criminal mind at work in the context of extreme human violence. Second, to outline the parameters of the emerging psycho-social field of ’de-humanisation’ studies

    • Civil Dispute Resolution Options – Strategy, Risks and Costs (30 credits)

      This module provides an overview of the types of alternative dispute resolution (or ADR) processes that are available to resolve a civil dispute, including adjudicative, non-adjudicative and online dispute resolution (ODR) options.

    • Law and War (30 credits)

      This module deals with the legal regime governing the use of force and the legal regulation of armed conflict. It explores the tension between the state-centric nature of international law and the role that non-state armed groups play in situations of armed conflict.

    • Mediation and Negotiation (30 credits)

      This module focuses on the process of mediation, the use of which to resolve civil disputes has grown substantially over recent years. Mediation may be used in relation to anything from a large commercial case to a small value dispute

    • Qualitative Research Methods (15 credits)

      This module provides you with an opportunity to gain knowledge of qualitative methods and the means to critically evaluate qualitative research. The module has been designed to cover the most widely used qualitative methods across the social sciences, with a view to providing you with a broad as well as specialised understanding of the range of ways in which qualitative research is designed and carried out.

    Dissertation

    • MA Dissertation (60 credits)

      This module will offer you the opportunity to acquire the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to design, conduct and present research in a chosen topic in order to produce a 15,000-words dissertation.

    Teaching and assessment

    In this Diplomacy and Foreign Policy MA, you will learn from research-active staff who are deeply passionate about their work. They often appear in national and global media and can advise policy-makers.

    You will be assessed on written coursework, with the exception of Strategy, Diplomacy and Decision-making. Due to the more practical nature of this module, assessment also includes performance in class exercises.

    We do not assess by examinations. Coursework is typically a 3,000-word or 4,000-word essay.

    You have to complete a dissertation of 15,000 words worth 60 credits or one-third of your overall mark.

    Our Practitioner Series is a programme of talks from invited experts who have experience of serving as high-profile diplomats or government advisers.

    English language requirements

    If you're a national of a recognised majority English-speaking country as defined by the government, or have previously completed a university degree (or equivalent) in one, you will not need to prove your knowledge of English to apply for the course.

    Please note that if your country is not defined as majority-English-speaking by the government you will need to demonstrate you meet the English language requirements for the course.

    • IELTS academic test with an overall score of 6.5 with no less than 6.0 in any component.
    • TOEFL test with a score of at least 90, with a minimum of 19 in Listening, 20 in Reading, 19 in Writing and 22 in Speaking.

    We will also accept an equivalent score in any of the tests listed under the English language requirements section.

    You must have completed the qualification no more than two years prior to the start of the course.

    Application process

    When applying, you will be expected to submit the following:

    • One application form
    • A short personal statement (800-1200 words) outlining why you are applying for this programme and any relevant professional experience that you might have. In addition, you may wish to outline your vision for how the degree will feed into your research or professional career.
    • A copy of your degree transcript: We require an original transcript or a copy certified by your institution. If you have not yet graduated, you will be required to send us your degree transcript as soon as it is available. You will not be able to register as a City student without having supplied your degree transcript.
    • Proof of English proficiency (unless you are a native English speaker or have completed your first degree in English).
    • Please note: Academic references are not required when you submit your application. However, the admissions tutor may request them at a later date to help make a decision on your application.
