Solidarity beyond borders? The interaction between solidarity and EU citizenship

Abstract

Solidarity (Art 2 TEU) and EU citizenship (Article 20 TFEU) are both important constitutional concepts of EU law. In her presentation Prof. Hanneke van Eijken (Utrecht University) will discuss whether and how solidarity and EU citizenship are connected. She will discuss how solidarity is transformed from the case law on social rights, residency to how solidarity is applied by the Court of Justice in the more recent case Commission v Malta.

About the speaker

Prof. Dr. Hanneke van Eijken is professor Rule of Law and Democracy at Utrecht University. She is specialised in EU citizenship and constitutional EU law. In her research she analyses both citizens participation, fundamental rights and the interaction between EU and national law in the field of citizenship.
