Speaker: Professor Sarah Bridle, University of York
Food contributes about one third of all climate change and food alone is projected to cause two degrees of warming by the end of the century (Crippa et al 2021; Clarke et al 2021). But who has the power to change this? I report on our work to engage citizens on the topic, with the goal of supporting systemic change, and share resources you can use in your outreach, as well as with friends and family. I discuss the role of governments, including the UK's Food Data Transparency Partnership. With the upcoming government land use framework in mind, I showcase the FixOurFood dashboard and compare interventions from diets to land use change on metrics including greenhouse gas emissions and UK self-sufficiency. I then turn to potential food crises, asking your opinion on the likelihood of different potential food-related civil unrest, and share our latest work on the opinions of a set of food system experts. Finally, I describe work of the AFN Network+ (UKRI Agri-food for Net Zero Network+) to connect academics and stakeholders and help inform UKRI's future funding towards net zero through food, and how you can get involved.
Professor Sarah Bridle is Chair in Food, Climate and Society at the University of York, and author of Food and Climate Change -- Without the Hot Air.
