From Jenner to genomics
The Institute for Infection and Immunity is building on an outstanding track record of research and innovation in infectious disease. Its most illustrious alumnus is Edward Jenner, who trained at the School of Health & Medical Sciences under the direction of the eminent surgeon, John Hunter.
Jenner’s inoculation in 1796 of eight-year-old James Phipps with fluid from cowpox blisters, to provide protection against smallpox, launched a new era of vaccination and control of infectious disease. Infection and immunity have remained strengths of the School and important themes for the university ever since. From pioneering genomic studies of bacterial pathogens, to innovative developments of plant-derived biopharmaceuticals, the institute remains at the forefront of global efforts to diagnose, prevent and treat infectious disease.

Jenner Day is a yearly celebration of infection and immunity research in honour of one of City St George's, School of Health & Medical Sciences most famous alumni, the vaccinologist Edward Jenner. Learn more about the event.
