Will the One Big Beautiful Bill affect my loan eligibility?
The majority of the One Big Beautiful Bill changes will take effect from 1 July 2026.
New eligible students starting their course on/after 1 July 2026 will be treated as non legacy students. The key changes for loan entitlements are:
- Undergraduates: annual Parent PLUS loan capped at $20,000 (per dependent student, aggregate cap $65,000);
- Graduates: Graduate PLUS loan no longer available;
- All non legacy students: where studying less than full-time a ‘schedule of reduction’ to pro rata loan values will be applied.
Eligible current students continuing to study on their current course into the 2026-2027 academic year will be treated as legacy students and continue with their current eligibility for Direct Loans for up to 3 years or ‘expected time to credential’.
