Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a very important aspect of medical education and is often not taught specifically in either undergraduate or postgraduate courses. St George’s has one of the few TBI services in the country, and the TBI team have developed this one-day teaching course to focus on the clinical management of this patient group.

The course will cover:
- traumatic brain injury presentations, and the common complications of the pathology
- understanding the importance of inter-disciplinary team working
- how the various allied healthcare professional members of the team integrate with the medical staff.
We will also concentrate on important topics such as the Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty and the management of the acutely behaviourally disturbed patient. These are all critical to all healthcare professionals on a day to day basis.
A particular focus will be the inter-disciplinary team management and the entire multidisciplinary team will be presenting during this teaching day.

Timetable
This course will be held on 10 June 2026. This is a hybrid course and delegates can choose to attend face to face or online via MS Teams.
What will I learn?
Learners who complete the course will understand:
- the way in which a multidisciplinary team works together in an inter-disciplinary way
- the common presentations of a patient with a TBI
- the principles behind the treatment of the acutely agitated patient
- The Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty clause, and why these are important patient safeguards.

Delegates will be issued with a certificate of attendance and CPD will be sought from Federation of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom.

Dr Colette Griffin
Course Lead
Dr Colette Griffin is a Consultant Neurologist at St George’s Hospital, London. Her area of specialist interest is traumatic brain injury (TBI). Dr Griffin developed and ran a very busy TBI service at St George’s Hospital Major Trauma Centre. The dedicated TBI beds on the unit consist both of acute access beds and level one specialist neurorehabilitation beds. This enables seamless care of patients from NITU through their acute and neurorehabilitation pathway, through to home and includes community and vocational rehabilitation services.
She undertook her neurological training at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, The Royal London Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital. She has published over thirty peer reviewed papers, and her academic interest is in the field of advanced MRI techniques and their ability to provide prognostic information in TBI. She is also particularly interested in the field of mild TBI and sport. In her spare time she enjoys skiing and also sails competitively.
