Advancing Clinical Education and Supervision

As health and social care practitioners, you will work in complex and evolving practice settings, requiring effective teaching, the dissemination of best evidence, and the assessment of learners, patient/service user groups, and colleagues.

Drawing on educational theory and contemporary research, the module explores reflective practice, feedback, assessment, and supervision, and their role in enhancing learning experiences and improving service provision. It encourages critical reflection on your own professional practice while equipping you to support the development of colleagues, learners, and future practitioners.

This module is part of the Advanced Clinical Practice MSc and can also be taken as a stand-alone module.

Who is it for?

Applicants must be qualified healthcare professionals registered to practise in the UK and hold registration with the relevant UK professional regulatory body. They should be working in an appropriate practice setting. The course is particularly suited to those in, or aspiring to, educational, supervisory, advanced practice, leadership, and management roles.

This short course module is designed to be flexible in allowing you to study and reach your goals at your own pace. Our health CPD courses are credit-bearing modules that contribute to a University degree or award.

Transfer course credits towards postgraduate taught degree

As a health care professional, once you've completed this course you could offset 15 credits as part of a postgraduate programme, continuing your study with further modules to make up a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) 60 credits, Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) 120 credits or Master of Science (MSc) 180 credits qualification (all credits must be awarded within five years of study commencing).

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

• Understand key learning and teaching theories.
• Apply educational principles to support your own development and that of colleagues, students, and learners.
• Evaluate current evidence, policy, and professional opinion related to learning, teaching, assessment, and supervision.
• Use this knowledge to underpin effective practice education across professional boundaries.
• Use professional learning theories and development frameworks to enhance clinical practice and continuing professional development (CPD).
• Integrate educational leadership into your wider professional role.
• Participate in learning sets, tutorials, and collaborative activities.
• Learn with and from colleagues from different professions and apply learning to your own workplace context.

Teaching will be a combination lectures, problem-based learning, group discussion, multi-professional scenarios and formative assessment.

This is a 15-credit level 7 module with a total of 150 study hours, broken down as follows:

• Synchronous teaching will be a combination of face to face and online delivery (35 hours).
• Self-directed learning (100 hours).
• Summative assessments preparation (15 hours).

Summative assessments:

1: You are required to submit and present a conference style poster exploring an aspect of education or supervision in the context of your own practice area. This will make up 80% of your grade.

2: You are required to submit a learning needs analysis. This will make up 20% of your grade.

This course is worth 15 credits toward eligible programmes.

• You must be a qualified health-care professional registered to practice in the UK.

English requirements

If your first language is not English, one of the following is required:

• A first degree from a UK university
• A first degree from an overseas institution recognised by City St Georges University of London as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions from Australia, Canada or the United States of America.
• International English Language Test Service (IELTS) a score of 7.0 is required with no subtest below 7.0
• Pearson Test of English (Academic) score 72 required
• TOEFL 100 overall with 24 in Writing, 20 in Listening, 19 Reading and 20 Speaking
• Other evidence of proficiency in the English language, which satisfies the board of studies concerned, including registration with your professional regulator.
