Over the summer, Professor Mark Broom was elected as the new president of the International Society of Dynamic Games (ISDG).

Founded in 1990, the ISDG has around 700 members from across the world and exists to promote and foster the development and applications of dynamic game theory.

Dynamic game theory is a branch of game theory which studies strategic interactions in which the order of moves matters, time progresses, and players use past information to adjust their decisions.

Professor Mark Broom

The theory involves a number of core themes including:

  • mean-field games: studies decision-making for huge populations where individual effects are tiny
  • differential games: analyses continuous-time dynamic conflicts using differential equations
  • stochastic games: models repeated interactions with probabilistic state transitions and uncertainty
  • evolutionary games: examines how strategies succeed and spread through natural selection

with applications including biology, computer science, economics, engineering, management science, and political science.

The society runs regular research symposia and workshops as well as supporting publications, in particular being closely associated with the journal, Dynamic Games and Applications.

As president, Mark now leads the society's programme of activities and aims to strengthen the engagement of the society with its various application communities, early career researchers, and in particular build the society's main event, the biennial , International Symposium on Dynamic Games, which will next be held in 2028, in Florence, Italy.

Reflecting on his appointment, Professor Broom said:

This is a great opportunity for me to help shape a community that I have grown to care a lot about through a long association, and to which I hope to contribute to its ongoing success.

I am the first president to come from the research field of evolutionary game theory. So my appointment will help raise the field’s profile, as well as mine and that of City St George’s, within ISDG’s different application communities.

Strengthening links with these communities and with younger researchers in particular is a priority for me.
