The credit-bearing Micro-Placements programme offers students a unique way of gaining professional experience as part of their degree

Students on the City St George’s Micro-Placements Programme were celebrated at an awards ceremony at the University.

The Micro-Placements Programme offers opportunities for students who want to explore careers different from those traditionally associated with their degree.

The aim of the programme is to give students real-life exposure to the business environment and enhance their employability skills. The Micro-Placements Programme is a credit-bearing elective module.

The awards were presented by representatives from Bedfordshire Police, media company We Are the News, software company Lifecycle Software and charity Arthritis Action.

Megan Walden (Law LLB)

Megan Walden was highly commended for Student of the Year at the awards, thanks to a nomination from her host company CocoRio.

Second-year undergraduate student Megan secured a copywriting internship with the company, who work on improving creativity in children by revitalising the nannying industry.

She achieved her highest grade of her first year in the Micro-Placement module and said the experience taught her how to think creatively in a fast-moving business environment.

“My micro placement had a heavy focus on copywriting but as I learnt from this company, working in a startup helps you gain experience in every role,” she said.

Megan said she learnt many skills including using different content creation platforms, SEO, and copywriting. She was also able to incorporate her passion for IP law and offer advice to her colleagues.

The best part of the experience was making new connections and gaining exposure to the real world of work. I learned how to navigate meetings, communicate professionally over email, deliver presentations and meet deadlines.

These are all things you touch on at university but experiencing them in a corporate setting was a game-changer. The best part was gaining the confidence to walk into an office and know how everything operates. I now feel more confident in a professional environment.”

The awards offered an opportunity for students like Megan to reconnect with their host companies and celebrate their achievements.

  • Consumer insights platform Zappi (Best Host Contribution)
  • Digital education organisation BlueShift Education (Most Innovative Placement Project)

Student winners included:

  • Samin Siddiki (Student of the Year)
  • Daisy Fryer-Kelsey (Best Group Research Project)
  • Diya Patel (Best Group Research Project)
  • Leen Al-Tanger (Best Group Research Project)
  • Clyde Millado (Best Student Leader)
  • Mehak Mustafa (Exceptional Analysis)
