The event provided an opportunity for students to celebrate their academic, research, and professional practice accomplishments across a range of healthcare disciplines
Students from the School of Health & Medical Sciences received recognition for their exceptional achievements at the recent annual Student Awards ceremony. Hosted by the SHMS Student Experience Team, the event provided an opportunity for students to celebrate their academic, research, and professional practice accomplishments across a range of healthcare disciplines.
Executive Dean Professor Natalie Armstrong opened the ceremony by highlighting the School’s commitment to interdisciplinary education and clinical excellence. She thanked colleagues, sponsors, and practice partners for their continued support, especially those involved in delivering high-quality programmes that prepare students for vital roles in the healthcare sector.
“Thank you very much for being here with us this afternoon, and to the Worshipful Company of Nurses who are also in attendance. This is a true celebration of your support, and we thank you for it,” said Professor Armstrong. “Today, we present awards on behalf of our colleagues from across the school who are dedicated to delivering high-quality, cutting-edge educational programmes that support the advancement of excellent health care and promote health improvement for patients and the public.”
The ceremony featured awards presented by distinguished guests, including Hilary Andrews, Master of the Worshipful Company of Nurses – a livery company dedicated to philanthropic giving and the advancement of nursing education.
A particularly poignant moment came during the presentation of the inaugural Julie Attenborough Memorial Prize. The award honours the late Professor Julie Attenborough, a much-loved colleague who dedicated over 26 years to nursing education and leadership at City St George’s. Introduced by Professor Debra Salmon, Vice President (Strategic Projects) at City St George’s, the prize celebrates Julie’s legacy of compassionate care, innovation in education, and commitment to professional identity in nursing.
Julie’s doctoral work, “Nursing on the Edge,” explored the complex roles of nurses within the healthcare system, reflecting her lifelong dedication to enhancing the visibility and value of the nursing profession. Professor Salmon praised Julie’s ability to lead with warmth, vision, and a person-centred approach.
“This prize honours her unwavering dedication to the nursing profession and her commitment to helping others,” Professor Salmon said.
Closing the formal proceedings, Professor Armstrong acknowledged the hard work of all nominees and the vital role played by their families, guardians, and support networks.
“To those who accompanied our recipients – your support is very often the foundation on which success is built,” she said. She also thanked the student experience team for coordinating the event.
As the ceremony concluded, guests were invited to stay for refreshments and networking, with Professor Armstrong encouraging attendees to take time to reflect on their achievements.
“With students of this calibre entering the workforce, we can look forward to the future with optimism and enthusiasm,” she said.
