City St George’s is a partner in the winning Aeroelastics Tailoring Project led by Brazilian aerospace company, Embraer.

On Thursday 12 September, the internationally renowned Von Kármán Award for International Cooperation in Aeronautics award was won by the Aeroelastics Tailoring Project, a City St George’s University of London partnered project, led by Brazilian aerospace company, Embraer, with the project co-founded by Ranjan Banerjee, Emeritus Professor of Structural Dynamics who remains an integral part of the consortium along with his team.

The awards ceremony took place under the auspices of the International Council of Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) at its 34th annual congress held 9-13 September in Florence, Italy.

Professor Pedro Higino Cabral, is the principal research and development engineer at Embraer, and delivered the acceptance lecture at the ICAS annual congress which you can watch below.

Prior to his retirement from City St George’s in 2017, Professor Banerjee provided consulting services to Embraer as part of his role at the University. In 2012, he initiated a programme of research in Aeroelastic Tailoring for composite aircraft wings, endeavouring to create an international consortium (funded by Embraer) by bringing well recognised researchers  from academic institutions and aircraft industry, who were world leaders on the subject.

Professor Banerjee provided the leadership and vision for the future in composite aircraft design and aeroelastic tailoring in the consortium’s early stages, and subsequently expanded widely across 13 universities, research institutes and aircraft companies.


Over more than a decade, the Aeroelastic Tailoring project has brough together an eclectic group of internationally renowned partners with expertise in a wide range of disciplines in aircraft design in a unique that brings together applied and fundamental research in the field of aeroelastics in composite aircraft wing design.

The project partners all cover overlapping aspects of aeronautical science and technology. They have conducted cutting-edge research, leveraging innovative methodologies and tools for Aeroelastic Tailoring.
