Hockey players at City, University of London have teamed up to raise money for an important charity. This year, the team’s committee chose a charity that one of its co-captains had a personal connection to.
Annalisa Redmond (Psychology and Criminology Bsc 2025) suggested Sarcoma UK for this year’s fundraiser, with a friend currently undergoing treatment for the rare form of cancer.
“I thought it would be a really good opportunity to raise some money for this charity,” she said.
What is sarcoma?
- Sarcoma is a type of cancer that can appear in any part of the body
- 15 people are diagnosed with sarcoma in the UK everyday
- The two main types of sarcoma are soft tissue sarcoma and bone sarcoma
- The most common symptom of sarcoma is a lump that is growing or changing
To help raise money for their chosen charity, the hockey team joined up with some of City’s rugby teams to take part in a local pub crawl.
“The pub crawl put a fun spin on the fundraiser, it was a great way to get together for an important cause. We visited local pubs in the area including the Red Lion and Dame Alice and had lots of fun,” said Annalisa. “The team also received a sizable donation from the Tower of London.”
The annual fundraiser allows captains to choose the charity they wish to support. This year’s event was organised by Annalisa alongside, her fellow women’s team captain Ellie Welch and men’s team captains Spencer Trewin and Kristian Fraser. It is not the first time the sports team has shown its generous spirit as last year, raising £600 for Young Lives vs Cancer.
