Filsan Ismail, History and Politics BA 2025, shares her experience of joining City St George’s through Clearing as A-level results day approaches and students across the country consider their options.

Filsan Ismail initially planned to pursue a different degree at a university outside of London.

After changing her mind about her next steps, she went through the Clearing process and secured a place to study BA History and Politics at City, University of London (now City St George’s, University of London. Read more about the merger.)

As students await A-level results day this week, Filsan, now in the second year of her course, shares her experience of Clearing and the positive impact the decision has made on her life and future.

Why did you come to the University through clearing?

I initially planned to pursue a different degree at a university away from London. However, after reconsidering my academic interests, I decided to go through Clearing and chose to study a History and Politics BA  at City St George's.

The combined course appealed to me because it offered a broader range of knowledge and opportunities to explore both subjects in depth.

Since making this decision, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of history and politics and have seen significant improvement in my academic skills.

What was the experience of applying through Clearing like?

The first step in the Clearing process was searching for courses on UCAS and identifying universities in London that offered my preferred course. This was quite an overwhelming experience, as it felt crucial to find the perfect university for me.

After narrowing down my options, I contacted City to enquire about studying there and to learn more about the various modules included in the course.

Once I received an offer, I accepted it on UCAS and finalised the details with Student Finance. This brought a sense of relief, knowing that I had secured a brilliant course at a university that was right for me.

What has your experience at City St George’s been like?

Since joining the University in 2022, I have had the opportunity to work as a Student Ambassador, which has allowed me to connect with new people outside of my course.

I’ve also benefited from the support of the Academic Skills team, particularly in improving my essay-writing skills. Through my studies in history and politics, I have gained a comprehensive understanding of both historical studies and political theories, learning how the past informs our current political structures.

What are your plans for the future?

I plan to apply the skills I’ve gained from my History and Politics degree to a career in Speech and Language Therapy. I intend to pursue a master's degree in this field at City St George’s, where I can build on my current knowledge and continue my academic journey.
