From Papers to People: Social Media for Research Impact

The Centre for Language and Communication Science Research at the School of Health and Medical Sciences, City St George's, University of London welcome Dr Melissa Brunner from the University of Sydney, Australia, to discuss using social media to disseminate research, engage with communities, and create opportunities for impact, as part of the SHMS research seminar series.

Abstract

Research can only make a difference if it reaches the people who can use it. In this talk, I'll share what I've learned about using social media to disseminate research, engage with communities, and create opportunities for impact beyond traditional academic outputs, including practical tips, examples, and lessons learned along the way.

About the Speaker

Dr Melissa Brunner (preferred name: Liss) is a Senior Lecturer, a mid-career researcher, and certified practicing speech pathologist with over twenty years of experience in the assessment and management of swallowing and communication difficulties in adults.

Liss has clinical and research expertise in acquired neurologic disorders, particularly working with people who have experienced a stroke or traumatic brain injury. Working as a guest and casual lecturer since 2012 has provided Liss with the opportunity to build strong foundational skills in learning and teaching across both in-person and online environments.

Diverse research experiences have enabled Liss to build specialist skills in qualitatively driven social media and digital health mixed-methods research. Liss's doctoral research laid the necessary groundwork in understanding the complexity of the issues surrounding people with TBI using social media and how it may (or may not) be addressed during their rehabilitation.
