Men behaving badly; exposing institutional scandal
In the wake of allegations against Weinstein, Trump, the President's Club and MPs, claims of sexual harassment of women within business and organisations are being reported on a daily basis.
City, University of London was delighted to welcome Madison Marriage, the FT journalist who exposed the President’s Club story and leading experts to discuss these very current issues and subsequent reporting by the media.
The panel included:
Madison Marriage - journalist at the Financial Times, where she has been covering corporate tax and accounting since 2017. Madison recently went undercover as a hostess at the all-male President's Club charity dinner at London's Dorchester Hotel. Previously she wrote about the global asset management industry. Madison joined the FT in 2012 from Incisive Media where she worked on two investment titles.
Professor Chris Greer - Criminologist with expertise is organisational scandal. Professor Greer recently presented a BBC Radio 4 documentary The Scandal Machine where he traces the evolution of scandals involving high-profile public figures and how the media report them.
Professor Heather Brooke - Investigative Journalist who helped expose the 2009 MP expenses scandal. Professor Brooke is the author of Your Right to Know (2006), The Silent State (2010), and The Revolution Will Be Digitised (2011).
Our chair for the evening was Professor Lis Howell, Director of Broadcasting at City and expert and researcher on women in broadcasting.

Women in the workplace: what does professional look like?
This year City, University of London invited leading experts to discuss the issues surrounding women's appearance in the workplace.
Panel:
Angela Jackman - Senior Law Lecturer and partner at Simpson Millar
Angela's recent research centres on the way African-Caribbean women choose to wear their hair. She recently had some evidence published in the House of Commons Joint Committee report into “High heels and workplace dress codes”.
Charlotte Proudman - Barrister and Doctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge
Charlotte is also an expert and media commentator on women's rights.
Dr Florence Sutcliffe-Braithwaite - Lecturer in twentieth century British History, UCL
Florence is a historian of 20th century Britain, and has published on Thatcherism, New Labour, and ideas about class, gender and sexuality in the late 20th century. She is also co-editor of Renewal: A Journal of Social Democracy.
Nicola Thorp – actress and equality campaigner
Nicola was recently subjected to gender discrimination in a temporary role as a receptionist, when she was sent home for not wearing high heels. The incident has resulted in a parliamentary debate to review the law around discriminatory dress codes

Is parity possible?
A thought-provoking panel discussion with leading female academics who have research or expertise in the field of women in leadership. Our panellists discussed how the situation is improving in certain areas, whether we will reach a sticking point and what could or should be done to break through the barriers.
Dr Ruth Sealy – Lecturer and researcher in Organisational Psychology. Areas of expertise include Women in Leadership; Board composition; Role Models; Diversity and Intersectionality; and Corporate Governance.
Dr Amanda Goodall – Senior Lecturer in Management. Amanda’s research is on leadership and organisational performance.
Professor Lis Howell – Director of Broadcasting. Founder of the Expert Women on news campaign

BAME Networking Group event with Bonnie Greer OBE
- A 2015 report found that there are 17 black female professors in the entire HE system.
- 72% of white students get a First or Upper Second degree.
- 53% black students get the same degree classification even when they enter institutions with the same A level grades.
The BAME Networking Group at City, University of London welcomed author Bonnie Greer OBE, Chancellor of Kingston University to discuss “How do we go forward from here?”
