Mathematics is the language of the modern world. It underpins the knowledge-based international economy and lies at the core of the information and science revolutions.
The CMI leverages the unique position of City St George's in the UK academic landscape, together with the internationally-leading Mathematics research expertise at City St George's, across three interlinked areas Applied Mathematics, Mathematical Physics Representation Theory.
The CMI is an internationally-recognised leading centre of Mathematics research, punching significantly above its size in terms of research excellence, funding awarded, and impact.
In REF 2021 the Centre was ranked overall 26th in the UK, (jointly with Mathematics at Queen Mary and the University of Sussex) and 8th in the UK for Impact.
Our research is funded by the EPSRC, STFC, Leverhulme, ERC as well as industry and government partners, such as the UK government and PayPal.
The Centre has an active doctoral programme and provides extensive training as part of the LTCC, LonTI, and EvoGames ITN. We run a series of Doctoral-student led research seminars, and have long-standing associations with conference series such as the Capri Spring School and ICFT.
Together with partner institutions, we co-organise high-profile seminar series such as the Algebra Colloquium, the Southeast Mathematical Physics Seminar and the Triangle Seminar.
Applied Mathematics Group
The Applied Mathematics Group applies mathematical methods to increase our understanding of biological, social and physical phenomena.
The group has four main areas of research: evolutionary game theory, network science, topological data analysis and fluid dynamics. It also hosts regular short term research visitors.
Mathematical Physics Group
The Mathematical Physics Group's research activities are concentrated on topics in quantum field theory, quantum information, many-body quantum systems, topological quantum matter, holography and string theory.
We develop and apply sophisticated analytic and numerical mathematical methods including integrability, conformal field theory, machine-learning and representation theory to the investigation of physical phenomena.
Representation Theory Group
The Representation Theory Group is interested in all aspects of modern representation theory. The focus is on gaining deep conceptual understanding of algebraic, combinatorial, geometric and topological structure.
