The Neuroscience and Cell Biology Research Institute is the home of cutting edge neurological and molecular biological research, helping to shape our understanding of diverse conditions from brain injury and dementia to aging and cancer.
We have strong links with clinicians and clinical academics at City St George's, School of Health & Medical Sciences (Tooting), emphasising translational research facilitated by the Neurosciences Clinical Academic Group (CAG) and the Genetics CAG, led by clinical academics within our institute.

The Neuroscience and Cell Biology Research Institute is led by Professor Franklyn Howe.
Our neuroscience research, aims to enhance our understanding of neurological disorders, leading to improved diagnosis and treatments. We focus on various conditions such as dementias, cerebrovascular disease, traumatic brain injury, brain tumours, and neuromuscular disorders.
Our cell biology research uses state-of-the-art molecular biological, protein biophysical, fluorescence and imaging approaches to address the molecular and cellular mechanisms of neurotransmission and neurodegenerative diseases, cell signalling in cell division, endothelial and neuroendocrine function and the physiology of aging and cancer.
Research Sections
Neuromodulation and motor control
In the Neuromodulation and Motor Control group, we utilise electrophysiology, psychophysiology, and kinematic methods to identify new targets for neuromodulation, predict treatment response, and develop biomarkers for neurodegenerative diseases, neuropsychiatric disorders, and neuropathic pain syndromes.
Molecular and cellular sciences
The section carries out internationally competitive research aimed at understanding the mechanisms that underlie processes essential for life. Our researchers are actively engaged in translating new discoveries into novel clinical advances.
Neurological disorders and imaging
The Neurological Disorders and Imaging Section aims to enhance our understanding of neurological disorders, leading to improved diagnosis and treatments. Imaging plays a central role across our research themes, utilising 3T MRI for patient studies and providing imaging capabilities at the cellular level through our Imaging Resource Facility.
