About the department
The Department of Economics at City St George’s, University of London is a leading centre of excellence for research and teaching in economics. The department comprises over 45 faculty members organised in three research groups: macroeconomics and finance, applied microeconomics, and economic theory and experiments , and two research Centres (the Centre for Competition and Regulatory Policy and the City Health Economics Centre).
Our faculty produces world-leading and internationally excellent research on topics including, among others: health economics, the economics of crime, development economics, public economics, behavioural/experimental economics, microeconomic theory, macroeconomics, and finance.
We also have strong links with other departments and research centres in the School of Policy and Global Affairs, offering potential for interdisciplinary research in politics, sociology, or criminology.
About the programme
Upon joining our PhD programme, you will become part of a close-knit community of like-minded researchers. Our PhD researchers actively participate in our research activities by collaborating with faculty and fellow PhD students, presenting their research at seminars, and interacting regularly with our academics.
Over the three years of the programme, you will take PhD-level courses to enhance your research skills, get the opportunity to participate in advanced training programmes and summer schools, attend research seminars delivered by leading international researchers, and receive regular feedback from both your supervisory team and the rest of the department.
You will also get opportunities to work as a teaching assistant to receive additional funding, develop your teaching skills and prepare for your future career. Our graduates have pursued careers both in academia, at top departments including UCL, LSE, King’s College or the University of Nottingham, and outside of academia at world-leading institutions including the IMF and central banks world-wide.
What is included
Funding is available for UK, EU, and international students.
The doctoral studentships will consist of:
- an annual stipend (£23,805 in 2026/7) for three years full-time (pro-rata for part-time study), inclusive of London weighting
- a full UK tuition fee waiver
- and £1,500 in research expenses/consumables over the course of the award.
Eligibility
The studentships will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement and the quality of the candidate’s proposal. Projects demonstrating a commitment to interdisciplinarity, social change, and equality, diversity and inclusion are particularly encouraged.
Applicants must hold, or be on course to complete, at least a good Second-Class Honours undergraduate degree and a Master’s degree in a relevant subject (or international equivalent) or, alternatively, provide equivalent qualifications or professional / practice-based experience that evidences their preparedness for PhD study.
Applicants whose first language is not English and whose qualifications were not completed in a majority English-speaking country must achieve at least 6.5 in IELTS or a recognised equivalent. Please read information on entry requirements.

- Upload your CV, transcripts, language test results (if applicable) and research proposal (max. 2000 words exclusive of bibliography). Read guidance on preparing a proposal.
- All applicants should identify potential supervisors (each candidate will have two supervisors) and contact them in advance to discuss their research proposal and confirm the supervisor’s willingness to supervise the applicant.
- Upload a short cover letter of no more than two sides of A4, with your application requesting that your application be considered for the Economics Department PhD Studentship funding and indicating the potential supervisor(s) you have identified and whether they have agreed to supervise you.
