Delegates will talk with our specialist doctors and nurses, and learn about opportunities for research collaboration. The overarching aim of the course is to bring delegates fully up to date in the emerging and increasingly important clinical field of young onset dementia.

Who is it for?
This course is ideal for: General practitioners, psychiatrists (consultants and trainees), neurologists (consultants and trainees), dementia specialist nurses, and dementia support workers.
What will I learn?
After attending the course, it is aimed that delegates will have an improved understanding of:
- the features that distinguish early stages of neurodegenerative dementia in people under 65 from the worried well or the effects of depression or anxiety
- the diagnostic processes that lead to the recognition of Alzheimer’s disease, the frontotemporal dementias and other, rarer types of dementia in people aged under 65
- the support that is available to people with young onset dementia after diagnosis.

Professor Peter Garrard
Professor of Neurology
Professor Garrard took up his current position at City St George's in March 2010. In 2007, following six years at UCL, he was offered a senior academic position at the University of Southampton's School of Medicine. Since moving to City St George's, he has established a specialist service for the assessment, diagnosis and management of people with atypical dementia syndromes.
Professor Garrard’s research focuses on the effects of neurodegenerative disorders on spoken and written language; he uses computational methods including machine learning and natural language processing in order to acquire and understand the big datasets of interest (such as large text collections, speeches, etc.). His interests include retrospective language analysis of language samples and texts, including those from historical figures.

Dr Wei-Jia Zhang
Consultant Neurologist
Dr. Wei Jia Zhang is a Consultant Neurologist at both St George’s Hospital and Croydon University Hospital. Dr Zhang runs a weekly cognitive clinic at St George’s Hospital and is a principal investigator on numerous dementia trials.
Dr Zhang obtained her medical degree from the University of Cambridge before completing a PhD at University College London and the Francis Crick Institute. She underwent higher specialist training in neurology at St George’s Hospital, the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, and the Royal Free Hospital in London. Her academic and clinical training was supported by the Leonard Wolfson Doctoral Training PhD Fellowship and an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship.
Dr. Zhang is an award-winning educator with a distinction in medical education (PGCert) from King’s College London. She has extensive teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She is an Educational Supervisor, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and a member of the Royal College of Physicians MRCP examination board.
