The Principles of Workplace Supervision in Healthcare course is a non-credit bearing professional development short course designed to prompt you to think about supervision as a supervisor and as a supervisee. The content is relevant for all professions and levels of practice. The course will be blended, with the online component starting on 11 January and two face-to-face workshop days

Principles of Workplace Supervision in Healthcare Course overview

The course will open on 11 January 2027 last year and students were able to access an online learning platform for the course content.

Students were then needed onsite on the following days for the workshops:

  • 9 March 2027
  • 18 May 2027

Teaching will take place onsite from 9am to 5pm.

Effective supervision is fundamental for health practitioner’s well-being and the safety of both practitioners and the public. Registered health professions’ standards of proficiency state the need for supervision and employers also have legal duties, set out in the health and care act, to ensure provision of supervision and education.

Self-directed learning materials are structured to correspond to each of the dimensions of supervision. There will be a variety of video and written content combined with quizzes and reflective activities to support your learning.

Short course participants are required to complete all online self-directed learning and are required to attend workshops in person at Tooting Broadway Campus.

Who is it for?

This is an introductory course exploring the foundations of management and supervision and will be relevant across the healthcare workforce for both supervisee and supervisors.

What will I learn?

The course has been designed to support practitioners to develop foundation knowledge and skills across ten core dimensions of supervision:

  1. the purpose of supervision
  2. supervision models and approaches
  3. models and theories of learning and skills acquisition
  4. critical reflection
  5. feedback and facilitation
  6. a focus on the practitioner/learner/supervisee
  7. establishing a conducive learning environment
  8. registrant responsibility
  9. multi-professional considerations
  10. valid, fair and reliable assessment.

Assessment and certificates

The programme is in three parts:

  1. An initial face-to-face workshop to prepare for online learning
  2. Self-directed study accessed via an online virtual learning platform
  3. A final face-to-face workshop to help you to apply the learning in practice and to think about how to embed a positive supervision culture in practice.

It is essential to complete the self-directed study before the second workshop and these materials will available for a minimum of six weeks after the first workshop.

The first workshop will provide opportunities to work with experienced educators, supervisors and facilitators to add context to the self-directed study.

In the second workshop, participants will be invited to share how new learning about supervision is influencing their approach to supervision in practice.

Face-to-face workshops are delivered at City St George's Tooting Campus.

Certification

Delegates will receive a certificate of attendance.

    Professor Deborah Harding

    Senior Lecturer

    Deborah combines her role as Professor of Learning and Innovation for Practice at City St George’s, University of London with work developing guidance for the NHS in England and beyond. Her teaching, research and policy work are underpinned by comprehensive experience in multiprofessional health and social care practice, management and leadership.

    She has provided academic leadership for policy work in allied health professions’ leadership, multiprofessional advanced practice supervision and implementation of NHS England’s Educator Workforce Strategy. Deborah is a speech and language therapist by profession whose PhD research explored supervision for the allied health professions.     Reader in Multiprofessional Education

    Dan works as Head of the Multiprofessional Section and is a Reader in Multiprofessional Education at City St Georges University of London. He also works clinically as an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner & Practice Development Lead.

    As Head of Section, Dan is responsible for strategic direction and curriculum design of multi-professional, post-registration healthcare education. This currently includes the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice and a portfolio of stand-alone & CPD style modules. As Practice Development Lead within the ambulance trust, Dan provides clinical supervision, mentorship and professional leadership for advanced paramedics practicing at Advanced Clinical Practice level.

    Brogan is the course director for the courses within the multiprofessional education department: MSc Advanced Clinical Practice and PG-Cert Clinical Practice.

    As course director, she leads, develops, and supports the delivery of the innovative ACP curriculum. Brogan works with the faculty and pathway leads to ensure the organisation and delivery of the programme meets the standards of City St George's, University of London and Health Education England.

    Her focus is on providing a high quality education that is fit-for-purpose and prepares students for practical work as Advanced Clinical Practitioners. Brogan's aim is to continue to build the ACP portfolio of modules to appeal to a wide range of multiprofessionals.

    Andrew is an experienced member of the Multi-professional Education Team in the Centre for Allied Health. He is an Advanced Paramedic Practitioner (Urgent and Emergency Care) by background.
