Leadership in Advanced Clinical Practice Course (ACP module)

This module will enable you to extend your capacity to effectively synthesise and critically apply relevant management and leadership principles, theories and frameworks to:

• Initiate evaluation of the impact of multi-professional advanced clinical practice on service function, effectiveness and quality, ensuring good clinical and financial governance
• Lead, develop and ensure governance for a multi-professional advanced clinical practice workforce
• Extend your capacity to effectively synthesise and critically apply relevant management, leadership and co-design principles, theories and frameworks to the leadership and influence of multi-professional practice innovation and service redesign solutions, working across traditional boundaries for service user benefit.

The module is a compulsory part of the Advanced Clinical Practice MSc, and can also be taken as a stand-alone module.

Who is it for?

This course is for registered healthcare professionals. Anyone working in a profession that is registered with the Health & Care Professions Council or the Nursing and Midwifery Council is welcome to apply. Nurses, physiotherapists, radiographers, occupational therapists, paramedics and pharmacists are among those who would benefit from this course.

Benefits

The module draws on contemporary research, opinion and wider leadership theory to equip learner advanced clinical practitioners with the knowledge and skills that underpin effective clinical leadership. This includes approaches to operational and strategic service configuration and quality improvement within and across traditional professional and operational boundaries.

You will have the opportunity to learn with and from colleagues include membership of multiprofessional learning sets and pathway-specific tutorials for individual learners to plan and contextualise learning within clinical specialty.

This short course module is designed to be flexible in allowing you to study and reach your goals at your own pace. Our health CPD courses are credit-bearing modules that may contribute to a University degree or award.

Transfer course credits towards postgraduate taught degree

As a health care professional, once you've completed this course you could offset 15 credits as part of a postgraduate programme, continuing your study with further modules to make up a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) 60 credits.

Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:

• Evidence the ability to critically appraise historical and contemporary models of clinical leadership
• Evidence the impact of a critical awareness of management and leadership principles, theories and frameworks in relation to own practice-based setting and with reference to both organisational priorities and wider policy context
• Discern between contrasting principles, theories and frameworks for service evaluation, quality improvement and implementation science
• Demonstrate critical awareness of the application of principles, theories and frameworks for service evaluation, quality improvement and implementation science
• Demonstrate the ability to draw critically on management and leadership principles, theories and frameworks to support and empower a compassionate multi-professional workforce in the context of advanced clinical practice, with a focus on patient benefit and personalised care
• Demonstrate confidence and self-awareness in motivating others and providing a leadership role model to promote a culture of continuous professional and organisational learning for patient benefit
• Demonstrate an advanced critical understanding of the legal, regulatory, ethical dimensions of multi-professional leadership in an advanced clinical practice context
• Evidence the critical application of advanced clinical expertise to facilitate and provide consultancy across professional and service boundaries, influencing clinical practice to enhance quality, reduce unwarranted variation and promote the sharing and adoption of best practice.

Teaching will be a combination of lectures, Problem Based Learning (PBL) and multi-professional perspective case scenarios and tutorials.

Critical reflection of clinical experiences

• Synchronous teaching will be a combination of face to face an online delivery (40 Hours)
• Self-directed learning (80 Hours)
• Assignment preparation (20 Hours)

Assessment

You will be asked to ‘Describe how leadership influences organisational/professional culture and the impact on patient safety,’ as it is relevant in their own clinical practice area. The ability for students to choose their own topic allows for relevant assessments for each pathway (Musculoskeletal, Urgent & emergency Care, Critical Care, Mental Health).

The Presentation & Viva are marked on one rubric, where both Presentation & Viva marks make up 100% grade. Rubric includes section on use of visual aids/slides, so presentation itself is not marked separately.

This course is worth 15 credits toward eligible programmes.

You will be expected to have the following UK or international qualifications:

Students with UK qualifications

You should have all of the following:

• Honours degree (2:2 or above) from the UK or Republic of Ireland
• recognised healthcare/health-related professional qualification and current professional registration
• at least one years full-time clinical experience (or the equivalent in part-time hours) in health or social care employment (for example nursing, paramedics, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, radiology, etc).

Students with International qualifications

English requirements

If English is not your first language, you will require one of the following:

• A first degree from a UK university
• A first degree from an overseas institution recognised by City St George's, University of London as providing adequate evidence of proficiency in the English language, for example, from institutions from Australia, Canada or the United States of America
• International English Language Test Service (IELTS) a score of 7.0 is required with no subtest below 7.0
• Pearson Test of English (Academic) score 72 required
• TOEFL 100 overall with 24 in Writing, 20 in Listening, 19 Reading and 20 Speaking
• Other evidence of proficiency in the English language, which satisfies the board of studies concerned, including registration with your professional regulator.
