How to Interpret the ECGs of Athletes and Young Adults Course overview

ECG interpretation in athletes requires careful analysis to distinguish physiological changes related to athletic training from findings suggestive of an underlying pathological condition.

Cardiovascular-related sudden death is the leading cause of mortality in athletes during sport. The 12-lead ECG in increasingly used as a screening tool as it may raise suspicion of most of the disorders associated with an increased risk of sudden cardiac death, such as cardiomyopathies and primary electrical diseases.

Therefore, ECG interpretation is an important skill for anyone involved in the cardiovascular care of young and athletic individuals.

During the Q&A sessions and the interactive cases, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss ECGs as well as respond live to single best answer questions (MCQ).

Cardiology Event

This course is the first day of the two-day Cardiology Event. Day two will focus on Cardiac Imaging. You are welcome to attend either one of the days or the entire two-day event.

Who is it for?

This course is for anyone who wishes to achieve a competency in cardiac imaging in cardiomyopathies and in athletes. The course is best suited for consultants, junior doctors, sport physicians, sonographers, physiologists, physician assistants, and specialist nurses.

Timetable

The course will take place at City St George's Tooting campus on 10 June 2027 with live in-person lectures. Participants who cannot attend in person will be able to join the lectures virtually via MS Teams.

What will I learn?

The aim of the course is to equip participants with knowledge regarding the interpretation of the ECG of a young or athletic individual, so they can accurately differentiate findings suggestive of a potentially lethal cardiovascular disorder from normal variants or features of benign physiological adaptation.

Assessment and certificates

Teaching

The course is highly interactive through Q&A sessions and multiple choice questions supported case-based learning. The course will take place at City St George's Tooting campus with live in-person lectures. Participants who cannot attend in person will be able to join the lectures virtually via MS Teams.

Certification

Delegates will be issued with a certificate of attendance and 7 CPD points, which have been approved from the Royal College of Physicians. Delegates attending both days of the 2-day Cardiology Event will receive 14 CPD points in total.

How to apply

Cardiology Event

This course is the first day of the two-day Cardiology Event. Day two will focus on Cardiac Imaging. You are welcome to attend either one of the days or the entire two-day event. The event is hybrid, and participants have the option of attending virtually, or face to face at City St George's Tooting campus.

You will have the option to attend either or both of the event days when you complete the online booking form.

Participants should have suitable background knowledge to successfully complete this course. It is best suited to consultants, junior doctors, sport physicians, sonographers, physiologists, physician assistants, and specialist nurses.

English requirements

Candidates must meet City St George’s requirements for English language proficiency.

    Dr Gherardo Finocchiaro

    Consultant Cardiologist, Deputy Course Director MSc Sports Cardiology and Honorary Reader in Cardiology

    Dr Gherardo Finocchiaro is a consultant cardiologist at St George's Hospital and honorary reader at City St George’s University. Dr Finocchiaro has clinical interests and expertise in preventive cardiology, sports cardiology, and inherited heart conditions. He is part of the nucleus of the European section of Sports Cardiology and Exercise.

    He has contributed to international projects that have shaped education in preventive cardiology, and is course director of the MSc degree in Sports Cardiology, which was launched in 2016 at St George’s University of London. To date, he has been credited with more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed medical journals, and numerous presentations in national and international conferences. Dr Finocchiaro is also consultant to Cardiac Risk in the Young (a charitable organisation that annually screens more than 30,000 young individuals for heart disease).

  • Professor Michael Papadakis

    Professor of Cardiology

    Michael Papadakis is a Professor of Cardiology at City St George’s, University of London and an Honorary Consultant Cardiologist at St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

    His research interests include sports cardiology, inherited cardiac diseases, cardiovascular disease prevention including prevention of sudden cardiac death in young and athletic individuals, heart failure and cardiac imaging.
