User Experience Engineering MSc Course overview

This programme will provide you with research, theories and techniques for using AI in the design of technology mediated devices, systems and service and it will emphasise techniques for exploring and validating the ways users experience AI in their lives. This will include a thorough understanding of human capabilities, technology and the business and marketing constraints when creating and deploying novel technologies.

This programme is delivered by the internationally renowned Centre for Human-Computer Interaction Design (HCID) and will equip you for a professional career in UX Design, UX Research and UX Development. Some students may choose to continue their studies towards a doctoral level qualification.

By the end of this course, you will have developed a strong understanding of the fundamental principles of user experience for technology-mediated devices, systems and services, particularly those incorporating artificial intelligence. You will be able to apply AI across the specification, design and implementation process, while recognising the diversity of user demographics and proposing UX interventions that respond to the needs and expectations of specific target users.

Core modules

Through all core modules you will develop the Graduate Attributes, five core skillsets that will help you launch a successful, fulfilling career. Find out more about the Graduate Attributes.

  • UX Research Practice (15 credits)

How do we know what users want, what they need, and what they are experiencing through technology? UX Research Practice gives you the practical skills and confidence to answer those questions. Unlike many research methods modules, which often focus only on writing a proposal, this module takes you through the entire UX research lifecycle: from framing the right questions and choosing appropriate methods, through data collection and analysis, to producing professional reports and presentations.

  • Human Factors (15 credits)

The module will explore the diversity of the human as a user of technology, and the biomechanical, perceptual and psychological factors that govern technology usage and interactions.

It will consider the Human Factors of technology use in a variety of settings in order to illustrate the diversity of design and usage issues. The fundamental tools and investigation approaches will be explored and practiced in labs.

  • Experiencing AI (15 credits)

Products and Services that incorporate AI direct user journeys in ways that are directed and focused by data and algorithms. This may lead to efficiencies in accessing functionality and outcomes.

Conversely it may lead to a sense of loss of opportunity or control over expected outcomes. This has implications for all stakeholders as users may be reluctant to embrace AI enhanced products or services or may indeed be unwittingly disadvantaged as a result of poor engineering in terms of choice of algorithms and implementations of AI in context.

  • Computing the User Experience (15 credits)

The module will explore the fit between people and technology, focusing on understanding a stated human want/ and the appropriateness of technology being applied to meet that want/need.

It will then explore the part of the process of proposing technology-based solutions that involves constructing mockup and evolving them through prototyping.

  • AI for UX Professionals (15 credits)

People with fundamental skills required to deliver excellent User Experience (UX research, UX design and UX driven development) utilize an evolving set of tools that enable them to capture their work for the benefit of their stakeholders and colleagues. These tools are increasingly including AI based functionality. For some this appears to stifle creativity and innovation, for others it liberates them to explore alternative approaches.

This module aims for you to understand the functionality offered by various AI based or enhanced tools for the various phases of UX driven workflows. By the end of the module, you should be able to discuss the various opportunities and shortcomings of the AI driven approaches and make informed choices of which to use in a given context.

  • Interaction Design (15 credits)

This module provides you with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective interaction design, drawing on the Centre for HCI Design's research strengths in this area.

It explains the key concepts and theoretical foundations of the underpinning discipline of human-computer interaction (HCI), provides you with techniques for the design and evaluation of interactive systems and introduces seminal research literature in the discipline.

The techniques you will learn are widely applied by UX practitioners in commercial settings, and are relevant to a wide range of interaction design processes and frameworks.

Elective modules

  • Data Visualisation (15 credits)

Using graphics to explore and identify patterns in data is commonly adopted in modern data analysis and communication. This is increasingly important in the era of widespread use of AI, where the role of human judgement is necessary to evaluate data and analysis.

Effective data visualization design, production and evaluation is a valuable skill and is used in a range of disciplines from data science, journalism, policy making and health sciences to graphic design and the visual arts. This module will therefore equip you with the technical and design skills to create, evaluate and use data visualization in workplace and research environments.

  • Virtual Reality Design and Development (15 credits)

This module will introduce students to the foundations of designing and developing immersive experiences with a focus on Virtual Reality. You will gain hands on experience with Virtual Reality hardware and a series of practical tasks will introduce the fundamentals of Virtual Reality development within a leading game engine, resulting in the production of an individual demo VR project for your portfolio.

The individual demo will be produced using an industry standard VR template that supports navigation (teleportation, free movement), interactions (grabbables, sockets, direct / ray) and events (user interface, haptics). Students will be expected to expand this template with their own functionality using scripting.

Students will also learn about implementing physics / projectiles within virtual reality, lighting for virtual reality and optimizing virtual reality scenes for use on untethered headsets. Alongside Virtual Reality this module will also explore topics such as Augmented Reality (AR) / Mixed Reality (MR) and Motion Capture / Virtual Production, with hands-on experience in these areas.

  • Information Architecture (15 credits)

Why is it easy to find information in some digital information environments (such as websites, mobile apps and intranets), but difficult in others? Why do some digital information environments make it easy for us to find our way around, while others disorient us until we eventually get lost?

Information architecture involves devising schemes to support organisation, labelling, and navigation within digital information environments. It involves the structural design of digital information environments to support users in finding and navigating through information.

This module will equip you with the knowledge, skills and values to design digital information environments that are well-structured, organized and labelled and are easy to navigate and find information in.

  • Visual Analytics (15 credits)

This module introduces Visual Analytics as the science of human-computer data analysis. It explains the principles of effective division of labour between the human and the computer and the role of interactive visual displays in supporting human analysts in analytical work.

The module introduces techniques for display interaction: purposes, design principles, and implementation alternatives. It considers ways in which interactive visualizations are combined with computational data processing and how this combination can be used in the analytical process.

Data transformations, statistical and machine learning techniques are used with a particular emphasis on different types of clustering. Various human-computer analytical methods and procedures are introduced by example.

  • Entrepreneurship in Practice (15 credits)

This module seeks to provide the practical skills, reflective tools and critical insights required to take an initial idea, originating from students or staff, and develop it into a viable technology business. Developing an entrepreneurial mindset alongside the necessary knowledge and skills needed to launch a business or work within a startup environment are attributes that are highly valued in the workplace.

You will develop specialised enterprising knowledge and critical understanding of business opportunities within the science and technology industries. The module will also draw from real life examples and case studies as well as a multitude of tools, including the acquisition of soft and practical skills and the development of business awareness and professional practice to enable you to optimise and enhance your career prospects.
